SFLIS Minutes - August 11, 2004 - There are 4 of us here to start with and we all order the same thing: hamburger with cheese and fries. - We take some time before the meeting to design an rpg character. Like in Texas D&D, from Foxtrot this morning. - Is everyone enjoying this nice October weather in August? - We check the proposed SWAMP schedule for conflicts. Or CON-flicts. The schedule successfully avoids AnimeIowa, ICON, OtakuuberFest, and Thanksgiving. The name of OtakuberFest may be changed again. UOIAE (University Of Iowa Anime Event), Marty Gras.... Or YAMAC (Yet Another Midwest Anime Con)? - A picture of some kind of mechanical assembly is passed around and we try to identify it. None of us get it exactly right. It's a demonstration model of a rear suspension/break assembly for a semi trailer. From www.fark.com. Then we move on to 19th century problems with trains uncoupling and the front and back disconnecting with each other, and what they did to detect it. - An article, "Something - Not There" is passed around. The article, which contains no verbs, is a review of a novel containing no verbs. - What is logical? What kind of world would be more logical than ours? What would you use as a baseline to judge whether a certain behavior is logical? - Hearing someone speak Japanese with an Anerican southern accent is pretty amusing. - Anyone want to be secretary starting next week? The current secretary is heading off to Japan for a while. We need someone to do the minutes. If nobody volunteers, I might start making them up or posting reruns or a "best of" collection. - Now we're talking about joke warfare in World War 2 and the most dangerous joke in the world. - CDs containing scans of a lot of SFLIS, ICON, Gamicon, AnimeIowa, and Mindbridge mailers and flyers, and most of the SWAMP anime show flyers are handed out to those who are interested. - We ended up with 10 people at the meeting today. - Movie - The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, designed by Dr. Seuss. Not very good by today's standards, but interesting as a historical artifact. - And we're done. Until next time.....
