SFLIS Minutes - June 9, 2004 - Nothing much happened at last week's meeting. - There are more people here than usual this week, including a couple new members. - We have a discussion of cable and/or satellite tv and how well various channels work. And how to get free cable? - Analog magazine from July 1965. There's a good story in there. - What's a "beer joust?" Drunks on horseback at a renaissance festival rushing towards each other? Two opponents facing each other, balancing on kegs, rolling them with their feet, each trying to knock the other one off? - We might be going to see Spider Man 2 on June 30. Time and theater to be decided later. Anyone interested in seeing the new Harry Potter movie? - A kimono is modeled for us. They have two whole racks of them at Ragstock. Imported used clothing from Japan! - What has our co-president Megan been doing for the past 6 months? Nobody knows. - A discussion of Deep Space 9 is attempted, but then we decide that the topic is still off-limits. - Since there are a couple new people here, we do introductions. - Is anybody interested in filking? And somebody asks - what is filking? A brief explanation is offered for those unfamiliar with it. The SFLIS website says we do filking on an almost monthly basis, but nobody here can remember when we last did it, if we ever have. Quote of the week: "Filking is like farting - you can do it if you want to, but you shouldn't do it in public." If you can't sing, you can always do filk rap. - How difficult is it to speak without using the passive voice or the verb "to be?" Can you speak without saying "is?" How would you say "It is hot today?" "The amount of thermal energy and moisture in the air causes me discomfort?" Klingon doesn't have any word for "to be." Which made it difficult to translate a certain famous quote from Hamlet. - How do you pronounce "trebuchet?" Turtles can breathe out of their butts. You can see killer abs in California. Don't bother asking how these came up in conversation. - Last but not least, there's a SWAMP anime showing this Sunday, June 13. 1-8pm, Poppajohn Business Admin. Building.
