SFLIS Minutes - March 17, 2004 - News of the Week, The Onion, and anime show fliers are passed around. - Anime showing Sunday the 21st, 1-8pm, C125 Poppajohn Business Bldg, assuming the building is open then. - It's spring break. Is anyone else going to show up? There are only 3 of us here right now. Ok, now there are 5. We have snow for spring break this year. Is everyone enjoying their white St. Patrick's Day? - An ET the Extra Terrestrial pocket organizer for Game Boy. It's lame, but it works. - Does anyone here speak English? We have a grammar question. When you say something like, "To paraphrase George Orwell, all plans are equal but some are more equal than others." You're not really paraphrasing him, it's more like you're saying your own thing in the style of something he said. Is there a better word to describe this than "paraphrase?" We come up with things like 'to pay homage to,' 'to bastardize,' 'to plagerize,' etc. - From The Onion: Rumsfeld Hosts No-Holds-Barred Martial Arts Tournament At Remote Island Fortress. Has some pretty good pictures too. - To send a signal out in all directions to cover the entire galaxy so if there's anyone out there, they're be sure to pick it up as a signal of unmistakeable artificial origin, what technology would be needed? - Has anyone given any thought to Marty Gras? It won't be called that. Ok, how about Marty Con? No. There seems to be some disagreement about a name for our one-day anime fest at the IMU. Can we get money from the student government? If we don't want to do it at the beginning of the semester, we can do it in late October or early November. As long as we avoid AnimeIowa, ICON, the home football games, and Thanksgiving we'll be ok. We can have videos, panels, a costume contest, gaming, maybe a swap meet. But we probably won't be able to sell anything since it's in the IMU. And we can have a consuite, but without food. All of this, of course, depends on how many volunteers we get. Most of us think Marty Gras is a great name. We can have a Marty look-alike contest (but Marty himself will be in disguise), and a panel on "The Man Behind the Legend." With pictures. We can get pictures at the next Milder family reunion. This event will have no relation to Mindbridge, so we probably won't be mentioning it at the Mindbridge meeting. And we can have a dead dog party at the end. "We need to come up with a name." "We already have one." "No we don't." Ok, we can settle the name issue later. - There are 9 of us here now. - Channel 9 got a special deal on old sitcoms. Bought them as a packae, they rotate through them, showing each one for 6 weeks at a time. Right now they're doing Mork and Mindy. Is Robin Williams proud of his performance as Mork, or embarrassed by it? - Old video games. Mines of Moriah. You play an @ symbol, and the monsters are letters like B and D. For text-only CRT terminals. - A new idea for an unhorror movie: Night of the Good Undead. Zombies awaken at night to do good deeds, then turn to dust at daybreak. Unless they have some really good sunscreen, which will be available for sale after the movie. - Astroby-Frankenstein (1980). Apparently it's a remake from the original animated series. - How do you say "Mardi Gras" in Japanese? Probably the same way you say it in English, since it's actually French. - Josh has volunteered to be in charge of abstinence for Marty Gras. We might put him in charge of promoting SFLIS too. - What is Cowboy Bebop, somebody asks. Outer space bounty hunters. Does anyone have any requests for the anime show 2 weeks from now? Suggestions: a few good ones and many bad ones intended to clear the room. Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar specials, Digi Charat movie, Crayon Shin Chan-Smells Like Poo Poo. Or pick something at random from the SWAMP library that nobody has checked out yet. Or show the most popular title in the library - Tokyo Mew Mew. Or Magical Fairy Persia, or Magical Princess Creamy Mami. Ebichu, Colorful. Or, there IS a new Lupin movie that might be good. Then there's always live-action Sailor Moon. Might be good if we have an MST3K party sometime. Has Tokyo Mew Mew been licensed? - NPR radio has a lot of good programs - Says You, Car Talk, and many more. And the fact that people in SFLIS listen to NPR means that we're all highly cultured and sophisticated. - That's it for this week.
