SFLIS Minutes - January 14, 2004 - We're watching The Simpsons while waiting for the meeting to start. - We're wondering where our president is. And if there's a pattern to her presences and absences. Does she have to go back to her home planet occasionally? Maybe we should have a barbecue at her apartment and see if she shows up. - There's a game day in 2 weeks. - We need to fill out our student recognition form sometime in the next two weeks. - Gamicon is coming up. It's at the IMU. In February. The dates are..... The dates are Feb. 20-22, we think. Don't worry, we'll know for sure before it happens. - There's a report that Kodak is going to stop making film cameras and go all digital. - Is Scooby Doo awesome or does it suck? We have a big debate on it, but can't come to an agreement. The tv series was good until they introduced Scrappy. Unless you think it sucked before then. It depends on who you ask. And then there are theatrical animated shorts from the 50s which are really awful. But beautifully animated. They just didn't know how to write scripts. And then we go over the shortcuts they took for animation done by Hanna Barbera and Filmation. And the Simpsons parody of it. - We have dates for the SWAMP anime showings for spring. They are: Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and 15, March 7 and 21, April 4 and 18, and May 9. There were a LOT of other events that they had to be scheduled around. First summer showing will probably be May 23 or 30. - Pictures of what happens when you try to play Initial D for real are passed around. And an article on what the Lord of the Rings actors plan to do now that they're finished with it. - Is there any place around here that sells tape for reel to reel tape recorders? - How difficult would it be to make your own credit card? Or to copy someone else's? - From The Onion: McDonald's Introduces the McCrazyburger. They won't comment on where the beef comes from, but it's really cheap. - Car speaker competetions, complete with a physics lesson! Find the right frequency to make your opponent's car resonate and shake itself apart. Or blow out the windows. - HDTV test broadcasts at KCRG. Picture is crystal clear to start with, but when you convert it to standard definition...... it loses a bit. - Someone asks the question: Is there some kind of standard or benchmark by which you can determine whether an anime fan is a hentai? It probably depends on who you ask. At this point, we found it necessary to go over the definitions of some of the terms - hentai, ecchi, bishonen, yaoi, etc. Perhaps a person is a hentai if these are the only words of Japanese they know. Do people watch Legend of the Overfiend because it's hentai or because it's horror? Or both? Porn in Japan is censored, certain body parts are blurred or hidden, even though it's obvious what the characters on screen are doing. Japan doesn't allow you to bring in porn from outside the country, but you can buy all you want while you're there. The US doesn't allow you to bring in porn from outside the country, but you can buy all you want while you're there. Each country is protecting its own pornography industry. - Ok, enough of that. We're done for this week.
