SFLIS Minutes - May 14, 2003 - Old business: We're still not paying for Josh's education. - X-Men 2 was good. - We have room W207 Poppajohn Business Bldg. for our summer anime showings. Dates are June 1 and 15, July 6 and 27. A lazy summer schedule, showing lazy anime with lazy people watching. There's tons of lousy anime out there made by lazy people, especially the stuff intended for the American market. - Anime Central is this weekend. There's an arcade game auction in Des Moines on Saturday. - Should we schedule a party at Marty's sometime this summer? On a weekend afternoon? - How much funding did we get this year? Not sure exactly and our treasurer isn't here. Not as much as we asked for, but enough for office supplies. - And now for the new business that everyone's been waiting to discuss: The Mill will be closing in June. Which means that we need to find a new place to meet. It's probably too late to ask for funding to buy the Mill. Should we meet in the place that will soon be vacated by Iguana's? There's a big upstairs room at Pizza on Dubuque. Or meeting rooms at the public library. Or the city rec center. We can always meet in the IMU while classes are in session, and we might even end up with more people attending our movie nights if we do. But we would prefer something that will be open year round, even during the university's breaks. The Deadwood, where SFLIS started? Too smoky and it might make it difficult for younger members to attend. We want to avoid places that are strictly bars. What criteria are we looking for? Close to campus, open when the university is closed. Would be nice if it had food. There's the vending lounge at Hardin Library which is open 24 hours a day, year round. How about the steam tunnels? There are probably meeting rooms at other restaurants. We'll do some looking and see what we come up with. - For those interested, an article about The Mill's closing can be found at www.press-citizen.com/news/051003themill.htm - A suggestion is made to get a plaque for The Mill showing our appreciation for being able to meet there for the past 28 years. We really should do something since we've been meeting here for so long. - Now we discuss ways in which people here have gotten away with using coin- operated washing machines without paying. And how life in the dorms has changed since way back when. - Matrix 2 opens tonight. - The Chicago Cubs are doing pretty well right now, doing a good job of getting everyone's hopes up. But who knows, this could be the year for them to go all the way. If the Chicago Cubs win the World Series, would that be considered science fiction? - Bad weather! Severe thunderstorms! Hail! Looks like most of it's going north of us, though, like Cedar Rapids. We discuss the merits of the radars of local tv stations. - We examine a Hack Master player character mat and talk about some of the "differently abled" characters in the game. - And we're done.
