SFLIS Minutes - March 19, 2003 - We have a discussion of recent episodes of Buffy and Angel. And the relationship between the two series, characters common to both, and the continuity between them. And what's likely to happen next. - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is something you surf to during commercials. Eventually, after a few years, you'll see the whole thing and be able to piece it together. - Record blizzard in Colorado. Is Colorado having their state basketball tournament right now? Really weird storm - the whole thing is moving west and slamming into the eastern slopes of the Rockies. Iowa had a lot of snow in April of '73. We try to decide what's normal for Iowa but don't come to any definite conclusions. - Next Mindbridge meeting is 2 weeks from now, and the next movie night is 3 weeks from now. Should we show Monty Python and the Holy Grail sometime? With Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you can MST3K it using the original lines! - And then there are some movies that are too bad even for the MST3K treatment. With the three original Star Wars movies, watching them back to back, you can see the quality of the special effects degrade. Anyone want a boxed seet of all the Planet of the Apes movies? There's one for sale somewhere. How about Spaceballs for a movie night? As a parody, it didn't do as well as some of the others they produced. A good parody movie kills the genre it's spoofing, like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein did. The X-Men sequel looks like it might be better than the original. Then the discussion moves on to Dune and Starship Troopers and how you can get away with making a really crappy movie of something after the author dies. And people share some memorable lines from the Gamers movie. Then some discussion about role-playing games and roll-playing games. And diceless games like Amber. And Final Fantasy and the Legend of Zelda. And after some more of the above, we leave.
