SFLIS Minutes - September 11, 2002 - A news article is passed around: 'Fujitsu ships world's fastest, cutest supercomputer.' It's pink and purple with a 'Hello Kitty' theme and runs 'Hello Kitty' cartoons when idle. It will be used by the Pentagon for chemical warfare simulation. Now the big question is: is this for real? - The vote for the next dubbed anime series to show at SWAMP was close, as usual. Next show is Sept. 22. Come and find out which one won. - We're showing Delicatessan after the meeting tonight, in the IMU. In the Purdue room. - A move is made to pass a resolution prohibiting age discrimination between old and new business. - Email from some students wanting to start a new anime club on campus. Name will be 'OtakUI' unless they change it. May or may not do showings, might be more into other aspects of fandom, like costuming. Or maybe not. They've been invited to come to a SFLIS meeting and tell us about it. As far as we know, the club doesn't actually exist yet, it's just in the planning stages. - Orson Scott Card's new book is out. 1st three chapters are available on his website, so if you don't have the money for the hardcover book, you might want to aviod looking at them. - Are there any good SF authors still alive? We try to come up with as many as we can. David Brin, Larry Niven, etc. And then we talk about how awful the Starship Troopers movie is when compared with the original book. - SFLIS get-together at Marty's. Pinball, video games, order bad pizza, maybe watch some anime. Let's choose a date. Ok, we'll do it on Friday Sept. 20, 6pm. It will end when he starts playing Captain Beefheart. There might even be door prizes worth 25 cents. - Now we're trying to figure out how to get Delicatessan out of the box so we can find out how long it is. Ok, it's 95 minutes. - And to kill time we discuss Swahili, Japanese, Spanish, German, and lethal chemical compounds. And physicists doing stupid things with uranium and plutonium.
