SFLIS Minutes - May 29, 2002 - In case anyone's wondering, yes there was a meeting last week, but no minutes. - What weeks would be best to reserve the display case for? How about the week before ICON and the week before Gamicon? We can only reserve it for 2 weeks out of the year, but we might be able to use it for more than that if there are other weeks with no other groups using it. - Mary Sue Coleman's resignation is of absolutely no relevance to SFLIS. - The ICON hotel name change should be in effect any time now. - It might be a good idea to schedule our guest speakers a few weeks after the semester starts (one in the fall, one in the spring.) That way they won't get lost in the confusion of everyone starting their new classes, and they'll be close enough to ICON and Gamicon that we can use them for advertising. - A big box of old business is brought in. It contains books by former ICON guests, AnimeIowa cat ears, a Ferengi head, trojan rabbit, dice, a filk CD, and Nigel's games among other things. How about the Ferengi head wearing AnimeIowa cat ears and sunglasses while reading one of the books? Think that would look good in the display case? - And for the display case, might be best to go for the first week of the semester when there will be the greatest amount of traffic going past it. And put up flyers in dorms, Cambus, bookstores around town. And is there a way we can advertise ICON? The fact that they serve alcohol might be a problem. We could have an alcohol-free SFLIS room party there. Too bad about AnimeIowa. It's the weekend before classes start. We could always put up flyers saying 'Sorry you missed it.' - How many of the rules governing student organizations are the result of something SFLIS has done in the past? - And we have some more discussion of the SFLIS website and what we can do to get access to it. Is it possible to close our existing account and move it somewhere else? Or is there something else we can try to get a response from our current host? We'll give them one more try before doing anything drastic. If we can find a computer that will operate in a 130-degree room, we might be able to share ISCA's closet. Maybe we could even cook food on it - ISCA's computers and Pizza. Just think, we could have a server that serves both data and food! - Scott's moving party is this Saturday, June 1. Free food and drinks afterwards for all who help out. - Gamicon Lite is also June 1, at Excalibur Games in Cedar Rapids. - And there's a barn warming in the twin cities, also on June 1. - The waiter comes in and we order food. - What books have people read lately? Glen Cook's 'Angry Red Sky.' The latest book in the Spellsong cycle. - There's a Mindbridge meeting after SFLIS next week. - Gamicon will be sharing the hotel with a fly fishing convention. People start telling stories of the last Gamicon, when the Westfield was falling apart around them. "The Amityville Hotel: Each room is an adventure." Someone should come up with a game based on this to play at next year's Gamicon. - Should we go see Spiderman as a group? Apparently nobody at the meeting has seen it yet. - After doing episodes 1-3, George Lucas is going to re-reedit episodes 4-6. Maybe insert some characters from 1-3 into them, make them all as bad as episode 1. Maybe put Jar jar in all of them? If it's Jar jar's death scene, it might be ok. - And the next series to go through at the anime shows is...... The vote is close, official announcement will come later. - And we end up talking about sequels and whether they're hurting creativity, and how a lot of people only want to see more of what they're familiar with instead of trying something new. The Cowboy Bebop anime is what started this discussion. - Ok, we're not done yet. Now we're talking about movies and cartoons based on video games. Like Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Mario Brothers, etc. - The discussion goes on, but the minutes end here.
