SFLIS Minutes - May 8, 2002 - What does a $100 bill look like? When was the last time you saw one? They're used for smuggling drugs, aren't they? So is it only drug dealers who see them? - Who's playing with the lights? - We're taking money for Star Wars now. It's on the 16th at Sycamore Mall. - There was an anime show last Sunday, with Creighton substituting for Marty. Saw some Lodoss War, Slayers, and others. Plus a couple hours of video gaming which got kind of messy after a while until they switched to some easier games. Maybe 7 or 8 people were there. - Demicon was a lot of fun. Masquerade was good, some pretty good prices at the art auction. Good consuite, cool panels, lots of brand new stuff shown in the anime room. - Mindbridge picnic and Mothers Day are both this weekend. The picnic is Saturday, 2pm, at Morrison Park in Coralville. Mothers Day is Sunday. - We're all invited to Scott's moving party on June 1. Food and beverages will be provided for those who stay till the end. - How to avoid getting elected at SFLIS? Convince Marty to put in proxy votes on behalf of everyone who's ever attended an anime show. How about peroxide votes? A department of peroxide? Now we're babbling about valium and Antarctica. - We decide that the meeting has been in session for a while and we'll keep it that way. - We're going to look at our budget and see exactly what we have money for and how to spend it. We should advertise. We can get ourselves mentioned in the newsletter for incoming freshmen. $150 for a quarter page ad. Can we take it out of the money we're getting for the next academic year? If the budget year starts in June, we can. The discussion then moves on to how to distribute the funds from the D&D event in 2000. We will come up with a university-approved way of doing it. Sometime. - People start throwing out ideas for attracting new people and keeping them. If you came to a SFLIS meeting for the first time, what would you like to see in order to keep coming back? We might not be the best people to answer this question, because when each of us started coming, SFLIS was like it is now and we kept coming back for more. - Not sure how this came up, but there's a steam tunnel under the Iowa River at the dam by the power plant. - Meeting ideas: How about a discussion topic for each meeting? Movie nights are good if we advertise them. SFLIS buttons, badges? SFLIS membership cards. Membership cards made out of candy. SFLIS wrappers to put around hershey bars. SFLIS fortune cookie membership cards. Glow in the dark membership cards. Glow in the dark fortune cookie membership cards. We could have a baking party for this. We could reward people for doing presentions or for moderating discussions. What could we use as rewards? Free admission to a Mindbridge con? Or a 1/2 day membership to a con? Might need to ask Mindbridge about this. Nude membership cards - not lubricated/laminated. Cold lamination - otherwise known as packing tape. - We take a brief break from brainstorming to talk about other things. Like Star Trek detox gel. - The following dates for this summer's anime shows have been requested but not approved yet. They may change. May 26, June 9 and 23, July 14 and 28. - SFLIS membership cards could be badges or buttons that people could wear. Collectable from year to year. Mass emailing is mentioned, but we decide that's probably not a good idea. SFLIS has been used as an example to show people how to do their own mass emailings. We think we were chosen at random for this. SFLIS mouse pads. SFLIS tshirts. SFLIS dice bags. A full line of SFLIS collectables. Car antenna toppers. Shrinky dinks. Metal pins. SFLIS screensaver - what would it look like? But that would be politically incorrect - would keep the CPU and monitor busy so they won't go into power saver mode. A free SWAMP membership. Stickers. Temporary tattoos. Could we get one of the tattoo parlors to be a university-approved vendor? We could have guest speakers at the meetings. Maybe with a 4-Guinness honorarium? Probably couldn't do that out of student funding, though. We need SFLIS flyers to give out at the local cons. We could use one of the display booths at the IMU. - Gamicon Lite will be at Excalibur Games in Cedar Rapids on June 1. - Mirror of the SWAMP webpage is at swampamine.dyndns.org. - At next week's meeting, we'll discuss what to put in the display case. And what we can use as a slogan. "I've got SFLIS. Ask me about getting it yourself." Or "Joe gave me SFLIS." And we could have him autograph it. - That's enough for this week.
