SFLIS Minutes - May 1, 2002 - We're hiding in the back room today, even though they have the door closed, because it's easier to breathe here. - We're going to Star Wars on the 16th. Cost is $6.50. If you're going with us, you'll need to give your money to Josh ahead of time. At next week's meeting if you can. - Now we discuss ways of blocking out the sun so it looks like it's night outside. Need a thin sheet of metal to put in orbit which would block out the light for the entire earth. How much metal would it take? How thin can we make it? - Dr. Science will be at the Java House Thursday or Friday morning. There's a new Hardees commercial, scientists examining a chicken, trying to find the 'nuggets.' Duck's Breath Mystery Theater was at the first ICON. It's easy to fall asleep at a radio station while listening to the soothing rhythmic sound that a record makes when you get to the end of it. And we have a story about Fed Ex breaking computers and messing up deliveries. There's an interesting conversation coming from behind the bar now. And all the ceiling fans in the room have suddenly turned themselves on. - We start the meeting. - Crickets are always old business. - More wandering discussion.... Bicycles getting stopped for speeding in University Heights. "Microsoft purchases evil from Satan." Somebody proposes a tax on SF to pay for the space program. "Linux kernel delayed by Microsoft's army of evil monkeys." But they're not really Microsoft employees - they're only temps. - The SWAMP anniversary show was Sunday. People came, anime was shown. 7 people bought memberships so they could get the giveaway stuff. There is an anime show this Sunday, May 5, 1-8pm, C125 Poppajohn Business Bldg. There will be a substitute running the show, since Marty will be at Demicon. - Speaking of which, Demicon is this weekend. May 3-5 in Des Moines. And the Mindbridge picnic is next weekend. - There's some more discussion of what to do with the D&D money. Not allowed to just give it to people. It has to be distributed in a university-approved way. - We discuss sneaky ways to break a computer. Mac cubes will shut off by themselves in a few seconds if you cover the air intake holes. There's a hidden reset button on all Macs that you can stick a paper clip into if they lock up. - There's no SAGA for the rest of the semester. - Backing up a little bit, there will be anime at Demicon this weekend. And SWAMP's first anime show of the summer might be May 26, but that's Memorial Day weekend so we'll have to wait and see. - The Lorraine Theater in Hoopeston, IL has a fantastic sound system built by an audiophile. Great place for seeing big SF movies, as well as others. - A new product from Apple: The iToilet. Info is passed around. - Since other groups are putting out awards for SF books that none of us have read, how about coming up with our own awards for books we actually have access to? What should we call the awards? - That's it for this week.
