SFLIS Minutes - March 27, 2002 - We start with a discussion of urban fantasy. Not urban myths, but a genre of literature. - Someone's been watching Labyrinth. "You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power......." - SFLIS website: we might be getting closer to being able to access it. - To win an academy award, all you need to do is have a little sex action in the movie. There's a new computer animated movie, straight to video, featuring Barbie. Two days from now, the trailer for The Two Towers starts playing. There will be two versions of the Lord of the Rings DVD, a regular one and one with extra stuff. - At our April movie night we're going to show Les Visiteurs. (Not sure about the spelling.) It's in French. - The Barnes & Noble book discussion is on Tuesdays now. Next one is April 16. Maximum Ice by Kay Kenyon. - There's an anime show on the 31st. 1-8pm C125 Poppajohn Business Bldg. Read or Die will be shown. - There's a website with the secret diaries of Lord of the Rings, where you find out that all the characters are gay. Or something like that. And speaking of secrets, when's the uncut, NC-17 version of Lord of the Rings coming out? - There may be two new people here today. Ok, they've just arrived. We introduce ourselves. - This meeting's naked pasta has already been eaten. - Legends closes at the end of this month. - A bill has been introduced to congress. The Broadband Promotion Act. It is very strict about copy protection and would make it illegal to sell devices, OS's, and software that doesn't abide by a to-be-determined set of standards. It would make it very difficult to make copies of anything even for fair use purposes. If it looks like this is going to be seriously considered, we might do a letter writing campaign. - If DVDs are cheaper to make than VHS, why do they cost more? Why do CDs cost more than tapes? Because CDs are bigger, have more surface area? - The Metropolis anime movie is really good and is on the schedule for the SWAMP anniversary show. The DVD is supposed to be out by then. - The people who are going to see Blade 2 leave now. - We have a brief discussion of Minicon. And then AnimeIowa. We assume it's happening. Does anyone know who's running it? - And after a period of random discussion, we leave.
