SFLIS Minutes - June 26, 2002 - We're split up between 3 tables today with a lot of background noise, so it's not possible to hear everything being discussed. These notes are mostly from one of the three tables. - There will be a meeting on July 3, but no presidents. - There's some reminiscing about tape cartridges, film, and the equipment to play, edit, and store them. And the digitizing of 20 year old film stock of medical experiments that they're not allowed to do any more. And old video decks from the 50s to the 90s. Well, this WAS science fiction at one time. - Captain Kirk's chair from the Star Trek tv series is up for auction. It's the real thing - as badly made as you'd expect for something that was made for a stage set. - They were already planning sequels for Scooby Doo and Lilo and Stitch even before the movies opened. - Cat Sparks is the hottest new name in Australian science fiction. Do you think that's a pseudonym? - Zippo (the lighter maker) is suing Disney and ABC. They say a dinosaur from Dinotopia is cashing in on the name. - ICON and Gamicon fliers were passed around and some very creative suggestions were made for changes. Most were probably a little too creative to appear in the final versions, though. - There are lots of good throwaway lines in Lilo and Stitch. Movie is pretty good, actually, and the characters express a full range of emotions, and they use facial expressions and body language. Scooby Doo is fun too. - And we end with some talk about old film stock bursting into flame. It was really explosive stuff, evidently, and theaters had to take measures to keep the fire from spreading beyond the projection booth until after the audience got out of the building. Did they allow smoking in the projection booths back in the 30s?
