SFLIS Minutes - June 19, 2002 - What causes the seasons and how close to the South Pole is the southern tip of South America? - George Lucas showed up. Unfortunately he brought Jar Jar with him, and everyone fled the Mill. - Our next movie night is July 10. For real this time. Galaxy Quest, right after Mindbridge which is right after SFLIS. On the 17th we'll vote for August's movie. X-Men, Shrek, or whatever else anyone comes up with. - "Fast food sends schoolgirls into sexual feeding frenzy." An article, apparently from the Japanese equivalent of the Weekly World News, translated into English, is passed around. - There's an anime show Sunday. 1-8pm, S181 Poppajohn. - A piece of SFLIS history was found: a scrapbook with notes from '99. - Send your fortune cookie ideas to Lynda. lynda@tangent.org - A quick review of plans for advertising SFLIS during the Weeks of Welcome and for making fortune cookies. - Office hours at the SFLIS desk. Don't really need any for summer, but this fall, we'll probably need to turn in a schedule. - Convergence and Origins are coming up soon. July 4 weekend. - Now we have a moment of silence because people have temporarily run out of things to say. - Is Scooby Doo science fiction? Has anybody seen the movie yet? Now we have a comparison of the three Jurassic Park movies. A quote from Steven Spielberg - says he'll try to produce a lot of original science fiction movies to make up for the sequels he's not making. "Flushed Away," a film about a pampered rat who gets flushed into the London sewers. Will Disney and Pixar resolve their differences and make Toy Story 3? - A newspaper in Beijing picked up a story from the Onion and reported it as being true. Which is why you should always check your sources. And we have some more comments and a lot of giggling on that Japanese tabloid article. Might not be a bad idea, actually. There's plenty of anime to go around. - There's a slash-dot-com (I know, I should have looked this up and gotten the name and URL right before posting this) article that says that because of an antitrust law, if Microsoft loses in court, they'll have to pay $40 to all Windows 98 owners in Iowa. This generated a lot of comments about Iowa, but not many about the case itself. This led to a discussion of how people on the east and west coasts view the Midwest. Or rather, don't view it, but just think of it as a vast expanse of nothing, if they think of it at all. So, what can we do to make this area live up to their expectations? Should we doctor some pictures of Iowa City to show corn and soybeans going right up to the doors of all the buildings? - That's it for this week.
