SFLIS Minutes - January 30, 2002 - There was a meeting last week, but no minutes. - Iowa City is the farthest west suburb of Chicago. - The Maakestads had their baby. Nobody here has much info, except that the name is Rienna (may or may not be the correct spelling). Maybe we'll have more details next week. - We need to come up with a budget and fill out some forms to turn in to the university. They want all the details in advance. We discussed how the anime shows, SWAMP Gas, SWAMP fest (if there is one) fit into it. Also money for flyers and Summer PIF. The forms are due in 4 weeks. - We decide to start the meeting. - For now at least, SAGA will be reserving rooms as a branch of SFLIS. Some advice is given on which person in the Event Services office is the nicest to work with. - There's a new person here! So everyone introduces themselves, and we get to find out what everyone's last name is. - We discuss going to Star Wars Ep. 2 sometime in May. We'll buy tickets and go together like we did for Lord of the Rings. Should we go on opening night or some other time? It might be nice to find out when opening night IS first. And will it conflict with finals week? We start taking down names of people who are interested. - SFLIS will be helping out with IPTV's Festival again this year. The SF nights are March 9 and 16. We're going on the 9th. You have a couple weeks before you have to decide if you want to go. They'll probably be showing "30 Years in the TARDIS" on the 9th, and something for Red Dwarf on the 16th. - The SciFi Channel will be coming to Iowa City in February. Unless it doesn't. They say it will, but they didn't say WHICH February. - A Star Wars Episode 2 review is passed around. It came from www.darkhorizons.com/reviews/t020128a.htm Not sure where they got their information from, but it's apparently a lot better than Ep. 1. - "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" A couple people here do. Just ask them if you want to know. - The original Lord of the Rings movie is 8 minutes long, stars Humphrey Bogart as Frodo, and was made in 1943. Ok, somebody has taken clips from old movies and assembled them into the Lord of the Rings. - There was an anime show Jan. 27, and 17 people bought memberships. Lovely new cards, holographic. And you can buy a membership right here at the meeting! $3 for the entire year. Benefits of membership: You can borrow tapes and CD-Rs from the club library. And if you flash your card at Daydreams, sometimes there's a discount on certain new comic titles. Ask them for details. - Anime movie 'Metropolis' is in theaters now in both the US and Japan. Unfortunately, there's only one theater within 500 miles of here that's showing it, so if anyone's going to Chicago in the near future..... The Escaflowne movie is also playing in Chicago. - Gamicon Lite is Feb. 8-10. There's a prophecy that says all three Maakestads will put in an appearance there. Will they or won't they? You'll have to go there and find out. - There's an anime show this weekend, Feb. 3, 1-8pm, in Pappajohn Business Admin. Bldg. - Somebody's complaining about some white substance falling from the sky. - There's nothing new on tv right now. - A discussion of RPGA membership costs. They seem to have changed their fee structure again. - Nebraska is flat but not level. If you put a ball at the western edge of the state, will it roll towards the east on its own? There's a 4000 foot drop. Going west from Iowa into Nebraska, you can tell where the border is because it drops a couple hundred feet. - SuperCon was good, a real relaxacon. No dealers room, no guests, no art show, but there was a con suite, and people relaxed. - ICON is in October. The 18th to 20th? We think. AnimeIowa is in August, the 20-somethingth. Maybe we should write some of these dates down on our calendars. People are running AnimeIowa. Nobody knows who for sure, but we assume that they do. We'll find out sometime. It's all online somewhere. - There's a Mindbridge meeting after SFLIS next Wednesday. - Did anybody notice that it's snowing today? Kind of a relief - we were wondering if it had forgotten how. - The university made a mistake on students' paychecks and took out taxes for full time instead of part time. 80% of the checks ended up going for taxes. Did anyone get a negative paycheck? - During a break in the conversation, we suddenly hear from the corner, "...It was the best porn I've ever read." - We describe 'Tokyo Breakfast' to someone who hasn't seen it yet. Even the description gets a lot of laughs. - Andy's got nothing to do until 8:30. Actually, he has things to do, but didn't bring them with him. - Are there any good English beers? - And that's it.
