SFLIS Minutes - February 20, 2002 - Multi-page paperwork for our budget. It's due on Monday. We'll request funding for movie nights, SWAMP, probably SifCon, honoraria for speakers, office supplies, SWAMP Gas printing, etc. We'll probably throw out the request for money to attend Worldcon. - And somebody asks who the honoraria would be for. How about getting Joe Haldeman to speak at the IMU before ICON? As long as he doesn't mention beer. If he says there will be beer at ICON, then we'll get a bunch of frat boys coming there to party. If they do, we can give them our special student rate: all the beer you can drink for $200. Until the keg runs out in 10 minutes. ICON could make a lot of money that way, but do we really want to clean up after them? Ok, if we don't do that, then how about getting J.K. Rowling and Marilyn Manson as guests? - For some reason, we discuss possible locations of the SWAMP video library. Marty's office, the steam tunnels, ISCA's computer closet. In the computer closet, we can put the videotapes on top of the monitors. Just kidding. - We might have a movie night next month. - SAGA had a meeting last week, and 2 people attended. - ISCA needs help, needs members. They need people to come to their meetings. Unfortunately, nobody here knows where or when they meet, although someone said that they've met on Sundays before. - Book Discussion at Barnes&Noble tonight - Flash Foreward. Next month's book is a civil war novel by Harry Turtledove. Nobody could remember the title for sure, although we think it might be Century Peak. - There's an anime show Sunday the 24th, 1-8pm, C125 Poppajohn. - Radio show "This American Life." The show this week is about superheros and superpowers. 11am Sunday on WSUI, 5pm Sunday on KSUI. Or hear it in Real Audio later on their website www.thisamericanlife.org. Info was passed around, and one line in it raised some questions. It's either a typo or a sophisticated joke - a mention of 'bomb diffusion skills.' - Now we talk about file compression. Yes, you can compress a file all the way down to 0 bytes. It's a somewhat lossy algorithm, but it does make things small. And then there's write-only memory. Think it would sell? - And we end the meeting with physics, biology, chemistry, and calculus.
