SFLIS Minutes - November 28, 2001 - Terminator 3, with an old Arnold Schwartzenager (how do you spell his name?) And some possible sequels: Barney the Terminator, Poke-terminator, Harry Potter the Terminator. And speaking of Harry Potter, the movie is actually really good. - Catherine did her dissertation defense today and got her PhD. So remember, it's DOCTOR Schaff-Stump now. - Things become a little disorganized now. Rosewell and Smallville tv shows - are they identical? Let's have the next Worldcon in What Cheer, Iowa! How many nominations does it take to win a Hugo? There are guests of honor who proposition entire audiences for sexual favors, but they usually just get laughed at. Who would be a good guest for us to embarass at ICON? Elves in drag - is the world ready for them? Curry chili. About 2/3 of the people here have seen the Harry Potter movie. Beowulf, Mad Max, Tank Girl, Species, Earth People are Stupid, Earth Girls are Easy. If you have genetic flaws, you can kill interstellar space aliens. - Somebody found some more copies of Webs games to donate to Gamicon. There is a role playing system out there somewhere which requires you to use integral calculus, and it takes 6 months and a calculator to create a character. And then there are games where disadvantages give you more power. - There was a Steve Crow sighting at Daydreams today. - There's someone here who doesn't like Dr. Who? We'll have to do something about that. - There's no book discussion at Barnes&Noble in December. But on the 3rd Wednesday in January, they will discuss the Lord of the Rings and the first Lord of the Rings movie. - On Dec. 22, Mindbridge is wrapping at Barnes & Noble, 6-10pm (or attempting to wrap, depending on your skill level). Not sure if duct tape and newspaper is allowed. Those who can't wrap might be able to rap. - This is International Phonetic Alphabet Week. It's sponsored by the Borg. "You will be nasally assimilated." - There's an anime show Sunday Dec. 2, 1-8pm, S207 Poppajohn. Not expecting a huge crowd for this one, will be showing the ultra sweet/cute stuff that nobody wants to see (or that nobody will admit to wanting to see). Titles include: Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar, Magical Fairy Persia, Minky Momo, Creamy Mami. People are starting to ask for Tums now, just from hearing the titles. And we do some speculating on how they came up with the name 'Creamy Mami.' The "real" December anime show will be Dec. 9, including the Ah! My Goddess movie and Automatic Maiden (or something like that (A robot, after destroying all the evil aliens, only has a year to live, so she decides to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a maid. (It contains nudity.))) - The background music today sounds a little like Gundam 8th Team. - The founder of SAGA gets down on his knees and proposes! "Will you be my co-president?" The proposal was accepted, once she found out that she wouldn't have to do anything. It was a very touching moment, too bad nobody had a video camera. - Quote of the day: "Just lie there and take it." - Andy Wheeler is back from England. Give him a hard time if he shows up at the meeting. - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. That's the original title of the book. They thought Americans would be too stupid to know what a philosopher's stone is, so they changed it to a sorceror's stone. Maybe they're right. There is a book on alchemy in the library of a Catholic high school in Keokuk. In the non-fiction section, on the same shelf as Mein Kampf. Not sure if there's any relation between the two. - The Tick, live action. Both good and bad, can be pretty amusing at times. You can download Buffy the musical from somewhere. - University Surplus has cheap computer stuff. We need faster internet access. That annoying one-minute wait to download a 200 MB anime video is just too long. And a RAID array with five 60-GB hard drives. - What is Scientology? What do they believe? And where do they go when they die?
