SFLIS Minutes - July 11, 2001 - There was a meeting last week, and lots of important decisions were made. Unfortunately the secretary missed it, so they will forever remain a mystery. - Lots of comments on movies and tv shows: There are AI dolls that say cute things. The movie is different. Lots of weird stuff, so it might be studied in film classes in the future. Scary Movie 2 is pretty funny. Lots of people get run over by busses. The DVD version of Tomb Raider might differ radically from the theatrical release. They might restore some of the scenes with British humor that were cut because they thought American audiences might be too stupid to understand them. Buffy the Animated Series, aiming for this fall on Fox. But they're only at the scripting and budgeting phase right now. Maybe they'll just take a Japanese series and rewrite the script? There will be a trailer for Spiderman with the Final Fantasy movie. Jurassic Park 3. They've already used up all the material in the book, so how can they call it Jurassic Park? The book is written in 1st person. - Four people try to turn on the ceiling fan, but fail. - Marion Zimmer Bradley died a while back, which explains why there aren't any new Darkover books out now. - Cats and Dogs topped the July 4 box office. That fact itself might be SF. But people say the movie is pretty good. It originally had a much darker ending than the one that made it to the theaters, but they thought it would freak out the kids. Maybe it will make it onto the DVD? - And another good family film (or not), Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust is scheduled for a fall release. - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movie. Has anyone seen any Harry Potter parodies? Scary Movie had someone reading Harry Pothead. Has anyone thought of doing a Southpark version? - Beowulf 2000 kind of sort of resembles the original story. Lots of good examples of bad acting. Very badly done stunts - sometimes the hair color, etc. will change, very obvious that they're using a stuntman. Or is it a woman? Highly recommended if you have a dollar and lots of free time. - Origins convention happened over the 4th. Run by former GenCon people. Kind of a GenCon Lite. Included a game where 50-75% of the characters die, and a Legos pirate battle. - ConVergence - the guy who played Chewbacca was there. Also the guy who played Hitler in one of the Indiana Jones movies. We think he also played Admiral Akbar. - SWAMP anime show on Sunday the 22nd. Expect some games. - There is a caveman roleplaying game where you're only allowed a very limited vocabulary. From the people who did Battle Cattle. - Deadline to preregister for AnimeIowa is sometime around the end of this month.
