SFLIS Minutes - February 21, 2001 - Naked pasta with lubrication. - We got some mail from the university. We need to review our constitution and see if it needs to be updated. Deadline is Feb. 26. Just did it a year ago, so we just need to tell them that it doesn't need any changes. We also need to submit our budget by the 26th if we want to get funding. We'll probably request money for office supplies, SFLIS/SWAMP Fest, SWAMP shows, etc. And a clock for the SFLIS desk? Is it possible to rent storage space on campus so we can get funding for it? We could try to get funding for things like videos, but they'll ask where we store them. Do we want a table at Trek Fest? Should we buy a table at ICON? And Gamicon and AnimeIowa? Do we want to sponsor something like a movie series at the Bijou? A fanzine? "Spreading SFLIS?" A SEx newsletter, column, or comic strip? Money for SWAMP Gas? An atomic clock for the SFLIS desk? - There is a student government nominee who wants to come to a meeting and get some votes. We may end up directing him to a SWAMP show since there tend to be more students there. - Thanks to Marty for sitting at the SFLIS table at the Student Activities Fair. Got some books from the SFLIS desk to display, showed some anime. 2 people stopped to talk, and one was already a member. - TV/Movies: A Dragonriders of Pern series on the SF channel. Will it be any good? General consensus seems to be - no, it's not possible. Anyone seen Hannibal? Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is really good. Snatch - like a British crime film, but made for laughs. Similar in atmosphere to Pulp Fiction. Buffy was SF last night - a robotic girlfriend. Series might be starting to go downhill. Do female lawyers really wear skirts that short? - And now the question comes up: Is anything happening this weekend? If you go to the Westfield, you'll find this little get-together called Gamicon. Gaming starts as early as 5 Friday afternoon. So, who owns the Westfield this week? Is it still Ramada? - Dominoes is offering 5 large 1-topping pizzas for $25. It's in the Add Sheet. How many will be ordered at Gamicon? Or should they just move their kitchen to the hotel for the weekend? - The Des Moines Art Center has a special exhibition - "My Reality - Contemporary Art and the Culture of Japanese Animation." March 11-April 29. There's a fan art exhibition, and they're looking for submissions for it. They'll also be showing some movies and having programs on Japanese culture. Details are at www.desmoinesartcenter.org. - Book discussion at Barnes&Noble tonight - Steven Baxter's "Manifold Time." If you don't like any of the books they've discussed so far, come anyway and tell them what YOU want to read. - Terry Pratchet's older books are going to be re-released. Mort, Sorcery, etc. - SWAMP/SFLIS fest is April 15. It's also the same weekend as Easter and Minicon, but it was the only day available when we could get all the rooms we wanted. So, for those of you who will be here that weekend, who wants to volunteer? - That's it for this week.
