SFLIS Minutes - August 29, 2001 - Something stupid is passed around. A parody of Internet Explorer's "This page cannot be displayed" message. - Anime Iowa was last weekend. 952 people registered, at least 929 showed up. It was probably the largest fan-run event ever in the state of Iowa. Financially, they were able to wipe out last year's debt and still end up in the black. Things are looking pretty good for next year. There weren't very many disasters. The fire alarms were the hotel's fault, not ours, and they actually apologized to the con for them. Lots of families were there, parents and kids. Packs of high school girls dressed up in all kinds of anime costumes. A couple parents got bored and went up to the con suite and started cleaning. It didn't LOOK like 900 people were there. Where were they hiding? The hotel is pretty big, so they were scattered all over, not too many in any one spot (except maybe for the dealers room (and the gaming room, and the video rooms and the panels, etc.)) If you add them all up, you'll probably account for most of them. It was a big success overall. Lots of zombies wandering around on Sunday afternoon. - Mindbridge meeting. Please forget everything that was in last week's minutes. Couldn't get the shelters in Morrison Park, so the meeting will be at City Park in Iowa City, shelter #4. It's still at 5pm. And if there's any alcohol there, we won't know about it. How about ethanol, made from Iowa corn? - A few other events coming up: ICON is in 6 weeks. There's a game day at Legends Sept. 22. The Iowa Renaissance Fair is taking place in the Amanas this weekend. Admission is $8 for ages 13 and up, $11 for a 2-day pass. - We're having elections next week. At the Sept. 5 meeting. Is anybody running opposed? Is anybody running? If you want to avoid being nominated, please show up. - The Daily Iowan has lots of bar ads in every issue. They're displacing the news. - Kurt Vonnegut will be at the IMU main lounge on Sept. 4. 7 or 7:30 pm. We think admission is free. - We're invited to an academic quiz club tournament in October. They're looking for 5-6 people. - There will be some entertainment here at the Mill later tonight. They're warming up already. - UPN: There might be one in Davenport sometime, and there's a 5-10% chance that the cable system in Iowa City will pick it up. - The next anime show will be Sept. 9 in S207 Poppajohn Business Admin. Bldg. 1-8pm. There will be shows every other weekend throughout the semester. The new downtown parking ramp supposedly has free parking on Sundays. - The Iowa City Gazette and the Community Advertiser have registration forms to win free football tickets and a weekend getaway. - The University of Iowa is looking for male cheerleaders. Tryouts are soon. Unfortunately, it's only open to students. - You can tell classes have started again because the nuts are starting to come out and provide entertainment on campus. - Books at Best Buy, service contracts for electronics, Book Trader in Cedar Rapids - should we take a couple boxes of books from the SFLIS desk? They have a good selection of SF, maybe they'd be interested in an ad in the ICON program book. - SF mystery role-playing adventure at Serendipity, 8pm-midnight, Sept. 8. Title is "Mutiny of the Bounty Hunters." There's a $3 cover charge. This will take place on the 2nd Saturday of every month. The August one was kind of small, but went pretty well, considering that it was the first one. Fliers were passed around. - Is Gamicon going to happen? We need someone who can guarantee that the answer will be yes. Still taking bids for a concom, and it's ok if you want to change the date to give yourselves more time. If you want to run Gamicon, talk to Michele Maakestad. - And that's it. Remember, we're voting next week, so show up or get elected. So far, it looks like everyone's running unopposed. We hope everyone who's running knows that they are.
