SFLIS Minutes - August 22, 2001 - We fold flies for ICON and put stickers and address labels on them. Er, that should be fliers, not flies. - There will be booze at the Mindbridge meeting, in the hope that this will result in more volunteers at ICON and maybe some concom members. It will be in Coralville or Iowa City, probably Morrison Park in Coralville. Those who live in Coralville can walk there and stagger home. Sept. 15, aiming for 5pm. - AnimeIowa is this weekend in Cedar Rapids. - SF murder mystery games with space pirates at Serindipity, 2nd Saturday of every month. Next one is Sept. 8. Starts at 8pm, and there's a $3 cover charge. Ending time will vary, but it's scheduled until midnight. Each player is assigned a character to play. The September event will be set in a seedy bar at the edge of a nebula, similar in atmosphere to the cantina scene in Star Wars. - Dance Marathon needs help and donations. How about Klingon slam dancing? Anyone want to organize it? - We make some suggestions for a drink to serve as SWAMP juice at the SWAMP room party. There may be a pachinko machine there. - We don't have a room for this fall's anime shows yet, but we have dates. Next one is Sept. 9. - Serendipity has the funkiest chairs in the universe. If you have a bad back, chances are that there's a chair there that will cure it. - Somebody else died. Who? Sir Fred Hoyle. He coined the term "Big Bang," and we think it was in an attempt to make fun of the Big Bang theory. He also wrote "A for Andromeda." (There are rumors about a certain mystery writer who shamelessly stole his idea. (Just kidding.)) - There's a bad American version of an anime called "Samurai Jack." Evidently it's pretty hilarious. - $200 million Powerball jackpot tonight. How many people bought tickets? - Planet of the Apes is ok if you don't compare it with the old ones. - Who wants to run a gaming convention? How about doing a panel on this for ICON? - We will have elections in 2 weeks (at the Sept. 5 meeting). If you're not here, you're still eligible. - How many inches is 400? Huh? After some unexpected answers, we get a clarification: How much space does a stack of 400 fliers take up? - How about a SFLIS fraternity? Who has a house? - As people start to leave, we elect them to offices. Oops! They're coming back. - Iowa City is changing possession of marijuana from an arrestible offense to a citation offense. Arrestible? Arrestable? - And the meeting ends with a few people having an informal discussion of the Islands in the Sea of Time series.
