SFLIS Minutes
SFLIS MINUTES - MARCH 31, 1999
- All the people from North Liberty who had haircuts recently are sitting
at the same table.
- Passover starts tonight. Some people are doing satyrs. (also known as
seders, as in seder meals)
- SFLIS Craft Night after the meeting, 6:30, River Room 3 of the IMU.
Cell painting, Nebula award discussion, whatever anyone decides to
bring.
Of all the novels, novelettes, novellas, and novelinas on the Nebula
list, we found out that none of us had read any of them. (except for
one person who had read one of the novelettes/novellas/whatever)
Most of us had heard of fewer than half of them. Which brought up
the question: do we know enough about science fiction to be calling
ourselves a science fiction club?
- Barnes&Noble fantasy novel discussion group normally meets on the
4th Wednesday of the month. But in April they will meet on the second
Wednesday, which is the 14th.
- Next Wednesday after the meeting there will be dinner and hijinks at
the Mill. We have been promised some high-quality hijinks, so come
and find out what they are.
- ICON has radios, and they work. They come with headphones and are
multichanneled, so a person can talk to just one concom member at
a time if they want to.
- Mindbridge meeting, room 234 of the Clarion/Hampton, 2-5pm on April 17.
- Also on April 17 is the SFLIS trip to Planet X. Meet there around 6:30.
They have batting cages, an arcade, pool, minigolf, rock climbing.
There's a rumor that the ISCA officers want to challenge the SFLIS
officers to a game of Laser Tag.
- If you're reading this and you haven't preregistered for DemiCon yet,
you missed the deadline. It was midnight on March 31.
- Minicon is this weekend.
- Gamicon staff party and meeting at Zoey's, 6pm Thursday.
- Anime: Show last weekend. No show this weekend. Another show next
weekend (April 11).
Theme for the show is Sorcery and Sword, and there will be stuff that
a lot of people might not have heard of.
April 18 is the 4th anniversary show.
No AnimeIowa news.
- ChakaCon is in Cedar Falls April 10-11. It will have RPGA events, Ice
events, Star Wars events. It's cheap, too.
- April 14, Monty Python will be here. One of their movies, anyway.
We'll be showing Monty Python and the Holy Grail after the meeting.
- Next SF book for the discussion group at Barnes&Noble is the Lost World
by Arthur Conan Doyle.
- Riverfest is April 24, and we're going to have a table there. We need
stuff for it - cool con photos, props, games, whatever.
- Anime Central is the same weekend as Riverfest.
- "Martian fossils" caused some excitement a couple years ago. They have
now found some bacteria from Earth that are similar to them, which casts
a little bit of doubt on the theory that the fossils came from Mars.
- Stupid Phantom Menace news: Fans took some George Lucas interview
clips and put together their own preview. It's on the Web, at
www.theforce.net (maybe). This might not be the correct address.
Theaters are not going to be allowed to have private showings of the
movie for the first 6 weeks or so.
- That's it.
