SFLIS Minutes
SFLIS MINUTES - FEBRUARY 10, 1999
There are a lot of people here this time.
- Mail: A couple performances at the Wheelroom.
- Gamicon: There's a GM party Saturday the 13th, 3rd floor of the IMU, from
noon-close. It will be your last chance to register as a GM for $10.
Come and eat, play games, take a look at Dragon Epic.
On Feb. 20, there's a Gamicon, Inc. meeting, 4-6pm, meeting room B,
Iowa City Public Library.
Gamicon is Feb. 26-28. Lots of cool stuff. Two LARPs.
Volunteer signup sheets are being passed around.
SFLIS has a table at Gamicon, so if anyone wants to sit there and be
friendly, please do. We also have space for an ad in the program book.
If you have a good idea for an ad, talk to Catherine.
- Anime: Color flyers passed around. 30+ people were at the show Sunday.
On the 21st, you will be able to see the first two episodes of five
different "magical girls" series, and some of them are pretty strange.
- Mindbridge: They're having a board meeting at the GM party on the 13th.
They're looking at new ways to promote science fiction in all its
permutations, so if you have any ideas, stop by at the party.
- Cy-Con fliers passed around.
- IPT telethon: We're going on Friday March 12. If you're interested,
talk to Steve soon.
They will be showing Red Dwarf outtakes and a director's cut of a
Dr. Who episode.
- Now we continue the meeting with some vocal discussion. Yes, vocal, as
opposed to some other kind.
We need to be doing more things as a group.
Like SF film showings. We're planning to show Flash Gordon after the
meeting next week, but we don't have a room yet. If this doesn't work
out, it will be posted here. Otherwise, you can assume that we're
doing it.
More ideas: Have a gaming night once a month.
Filk singing.
Stay after the meeting and have dinner together once
a month.
Go as a group to the Barnes&Noble SF discussion group.
Go to movies as a group. In theaters, in addition to our
free showings on campus.
Do a Star Wars thing when the new movie comes out.
A special activity on the 5th Wednesday of the month.
Field trips, like to Cy-Con, Planet X.
Go see the animatronic dinosaurs.
Put together programs about books and stuff to present
in classes.
SFLIS trips to cons to promote ourselves. Some cons have
special reduced rates for groups.
Should we change the time of the meetings? Some people have suggested
it, but haven't been able to come to the meetings and make themselves
heard. We'll keep meeting at 5:30 for now, and see if any of them
show up for the after-meeting activities.
Also, since the Mill is letting us use this room for free (and has been
for over 20 years), we really should eat here as a group occasionally.
For consistancy, to make us easy to find, and to do the social thing,
we should continue meeting at the usual time and place, even if we have
another activity planned for that evening.
That's about it for suggestions (at least, that's all that got written
down). If you have any comments or ideas, bring them to next week's
meeting. Or post them here.

- Budget proposals for student organizations were due on the 9th. Our
proposal was worked out at SIF Con last weekend. We're asking for money
for VCR rental, printing flyers, newsletters.
- The SFLIS desk. Please, take advantage of the SFLIS library. There are
more books there now than we have room for. Take some and read them.
If you have books you want to leave there, go ahead. We'll find a place
to put them.
We need a schedule for the desk. We're supposed to have somebody there
at least 10 hours a week. A signup sheet well be sent around next week.
- There are no live mascots right now. Unless you count the ones at the
pet store waiting to be bought, unaware of the fate that awaits them.
- That's a wrap. (applause)
