SFLIS Minutes

SFLIS MINUTES - FEBRUARY 3, 1999

- Our usual room is taken by people other than us.
- Before the meeting began, we had a demonstration of a paper "magic flower."
  Sorry if you missed it.
- Embroidery for the AnimeIowa '99 caps is done.
- It's time to start the meeting and the only people here are candidates.
Don't people know what will happen to them if they don't show up for
  the election?
- Mail: Bijou spring 1999 calendar.
Dance Marathon 5pm Feb. 5 Until 11pm Feb. 6. Main lounge, IMU.
Vanguard Jazz Collective on Thursday Feb. 4, 8pm in the Wheelroom.
Another flyer for the Dance Marathon.
Informational meeting for ISCA. Feb. 9, 7-9pm, in the Minnesota room.
- Speaking of ISCA......several members of ISCA were here, and began
discussing ISCA business that needs to be taken care of, but then decided
to postpone it until after the SFLIS meeting.
- Elections: Election of officers is today. Right now.
There are no new nominations, and no votes were left at the desk.
Voting went very quickly, and the results are as follows:

     President: Catherine Schaff-Stump

     Vice President: Lynda Sherman

     Secretary: David Leach

     Treasurer: Michael Alexander

     Scapegoat: Marty Milder

Mascot: the mice that Ohmu eats

Mascot ended up in a tie between Ohmu and the mice, so we had to have a
  runoff election for them.

At the end of the voting, Pete Wezeman was nominated for Peter Pro Tem.
We voted on it, and he was elected.

It was noted that Catherine was the only candidate who adhered to
tradition and didn't show up for the meeting at which she was elected.

As of 6pm Wednesday, we had one mascot, whose name was Frank. That
particular mascot apparently only remained on active duty for a couple
  hours.

- Has anyone heard from our Canadian representative? No.
- Mindbridge: no news.
ICON is still waiting for an itimized bill from the hotel.
- Gamicon has paid the bill for our storage locker, and they will be
reimbursed by whoever usually pays for it.
- More mail: A Fandata thing.
An opportunity to advertise books by L. Ron Hubbard and get free ones
  for doing it.
- Gamicon is real soon. 120 prereges so far. There's a GM party on the
13th, 3rd floor of the IMU, noon until the building closes. Games, food,
and drinks. If you're running a game or even think that you might want
  to sometime, show up.
Signup sheets for events are going out to those who have preregistered
so they can sign up before the con. They are due back on the 15th.
- SIF Con is this Saturday, Feb. 6. 10am - 6pm in the IMU. Setup is at 9.
Flyers, advertisements are up. Bring food, games, fun stuff. Come and
hear a reading of "Muffin Explains Teleology to the World at Large."
There will be pizza, courtesy of Gamicon.
- Supercon: The chocolate fondue in the consuite was great. There was
ooblek there. Ooblek can be made by mixing corn starch and water. It's
impossible to get rid of if you fill a bathtub with it. The EPA apparently
investigated a disposal site for it.
SuperCon had a functional hot tub, good anime, a sort of do-it-yourself
dealers room and art show. Nice and relaxed.
- Gregg Parmentier and Myrna Logan are engaged.
- Chocolate Fest at Lindale this Sunday 12-4.
- Anime: The embroidery samples for the AnimeIowa caps were passed around.
There should be some caps ready by next week.
There's a show Sunday the 7th, 1-8pm, C125 PBAB. Theme is "When Women
Fight." Slayers Great movie, Ayane's High Kick, Yawara tv special, more.
Next two shows will feature magical girls and post-apacolyptic anime.
- Barnes&Noble stuff: There is a reading and book signing Saturday the 6th
at 2pm, by Jon Wagner and Jan Lundeen, authors of "Deep Space and Sacred
Time: Star Trek in the American Mythos."

The science fiction reading group has gotten so large that it's splitting.
Starting in March there will be two groups - one for fantasy and one for
  science fiction.

The SF group will be discussing "Clay's Ark" by Octavia Butler, at 7pm
on Feb. 17. After that, they will start going through the century,
with a book from a different decade each month. The book for March is
"First Man in the Moon" by H.G. Wells, which you will be able to buy for
  30% off, starting Feb. 17.
April's book is yet to be decided, but it will be from the decade 1910-
  1919.
Voting ballots for the books are available at the information desk.
They're in a manilla envelope with the lable "Science Fiction Reading
Group," in case the person at the desk has trouble finding them.
The book for 1990-1999 will not be voted on until the end of the year,
just in case the greatest one ever written is published between now
  and then.
- TV/Movies: On Sunday, X-Files: Full Disclosure, in which they claim
that all your questions will be answered.
Movie "Aguila" (or "Aguierra"), from 1979, in German with subtitles.
An interesting conflation of history and legend, involving people
in Brazil searching for El Dorado.
- That's it.
