SFLIS Minutes
SFLIS MINUTES - JANUARY 27, 1999
- Mail: GAP - Group Activity Program to match adult volunteers with youth
for recreational activities.
* Student Video Productions info.
* The movie "Top Gun" at the Wheelroom 8pm Jan. 27. It's a benefit for
the dance marathon.
* Mandatory budget workshop for student groups Wednesday the 27th,
Thursday the 28th, 7pm. Must attend one of them. (Kind of short
notice, but one of out treasurer candidates will be there.)
* Movie "Down in the Delta" at the Bijou last weekend. (Now that's
REALLY short notice.)
* A copy of Super Kick Ass Magazine, issue 1.
* We are invited to nominate someone for the Hancher-Finkbine medallion
award. Criteria is very broad, looking for liberally-educated
students. Maybe the kind of education you get from reading Super
Kick Ass Magazine?
- SIF Con: On Feb. 6, 10am-6pm. Setup at 9, teardown after 6.
Readings, workshops, games. Pizza courtesy of Gamicon. Bring food
to share.
- Plattecon Mu flyers were passed around. (Managed to resist the
temptation to call it "Plattecon Moo." But the flyer does have some
pictures of cards from the Cowthulu game.
Plattecon is March 5-7 at the University of Wisconsin in Platteville.
- Anime: Show last weekend. Next show is Feb. 7 - "When Women Fight"
That's it.
- Mindbridge: They have a budget.
They're still requesting the hotel's itemized bill so they can see
if all the charges are correct.
- Y2K Problem: Rumor has it that the university's ISIS system failed
the Y2K test. If your computer is old, try to find a program to test
it. Consider updating your ROM BIOS if you can.
- Gamicon: This was the last SFLIS meeting to prereg at. Deadline is
Jan. 31. After that, at-the-door rates apply. There are no more
convention survival packs. The last one was claimed right before the
meeting started.
John Blasko (the spelling's probably completely wrong), president of
JD Quest, and others from that company will be guests at Gamicon.
The website is up to date. If you want, you can preregister and/or
submit game proposals through the website.
Everyone who's preregistered right now will be able to presignup for
games.
At the con, don't worry about the alien with the medical scanner.
You'll all get home safely.
Weather forcast for Gamicon (Feb. 26-28): 14 inches of snow on top of
3 inches of ice.
- At Barnes&Noble on Feb. 6, there will be a book signing by the authors
of a book on Star Trek's impact on American society.
- Movies/TV: Some discussion, didn't catch the titles.
The new "Mummy" looks good, judging from the trailer. Looks like it's
going to follow the Boris Karlov version.
Less than 2 weeks until a big X-Files episode - "Full Disclosure," which
probably won't live up to its name, but may explain some things.
Skully has become an Immortal.
The next Buffy is a repeat.
Xena, Hercules, and Voyager are new.
Batman Beyond is on Sunday mornings.
On Saturday Feb. 6, "Power Rangers in the Lost Galaxy." Set your VCRs
so you don't miss it.
- X-Files fan fiction: Brandon Ray has been nominated for Best Author.
Read some of it if you have a chance.
- Where's the vote box? Motion is made to create a new one. With a
new belt. But it would be nice to have the old belt back sometime.
We will continue with the voting as planned, since everyone has been
informed, and people can leave their votes at the SFLIS desk even
without a box.
Voting continues for one more week, with the final count at next week's
(Feb. 3) meeting.
A couple changes to the nominations: RC Nelson is no longer a candidate
for Scapegoat. Jeremy Hitchcock was sort of involuntarily volunteered
to run for Scapegoat.
The candidates are:
President: Catherine Schaff-Stump
Vice President: Lynda Sherman
Secretary: David Leach
Treasurer: Pete Wezeman
Mike Alexander
Scapegoat: Marty Milder
Jeremy Hitchcock
Mascots: The Ferrets
Ohmu
The mice that Ohmu eats
Lynda's "monitor" lizard
- At last week's "Future Times of Challenge and Controversy, etc."
attendance was good. An RA brought her floor and their boyfriends.
They seemed interested, and they participated. Youngest person there
was about 8. Had some good ideas of human rights-related SF stuff to
do in the community, including puppet shows for children.
- The end.
