SFLIS Minutes
SFLIS MINUTES - JANUARY 6, 1999
The back room of the Mill was closed, so we moved the meeting to Taco Bell.
- 2 weeks from tonight, on Jan. 20, there will be a reading/discussion of
Game of Thrones at Barnes&Noble.
February's discussion book will be Clay's Ark, by Octavia Butler.
Barnes&Noble offers a discount on books that you buy for the discussions.
- Mindbridge has $27 from Amazon.
When is the Mindbridge meeting - the one that was supposed to be in November?
And for the new people here, what is Mindbridge? Lynda tells us.
- A huge stack of napkins was passed around. (Tacos and burritos can be a
little messy at times.)
- Gamicon: There's a Gamicon, Inc. meeting on the 17th, 7pm. It will be
either at the Maakestad Casa (with a special appearance by Zorro) or
at Castle Maakestad (with armed guards).
The Gamicon Iota #3 newsletter is coming out.
Preregistration ends Jan. 31. If you want, you can register at the SFLIS
meetings this month. Do it soon. Do it often.
They are accepting volunteers. Contact them in person or do it through
their webpage, which you can link to from www.sflis.org
- Anime: Looks like there will be shows this semester. As of right now,
the dates are Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 28, April 11 and 18,
May 2. There's no conflict with Gamicon this year, but there is one with
DemiCon. There's so much con action this spring that it wasn't possible
to dodge all of them.
- AnimeIowa: Finally got the bill for AnimeIowa '98 last week.
Still looking for more guests.
100 rooms blocked off at the Collins Plaza hotel.
- Is Iowa City still thinking of building a convention center? Should we
send them a letter asking them to act on it, letting them know that
people are interested? We have 3 cons that could use a good home.
Michele volunteers to draft a letter.
- SIF Con: It's February 6. We have the video room and equipment
reserved. Now we need videos to show and people to volunteer. If
you have something on VHS that others would like, let us know.
We need mailing addresses and/or phone numbers for the following
groups so we can invite them: Dagobah, Amesfa, and the SF group
in Cedar Rapids whose name nobody knows.
A draft of the SIF Con flyer was passed around for us to examine.
There are signup sheets for the video room, panels, games, etc.
Bring snacks, hanging-out activities, games. Volunteer! And remember,
this is supposed to be fun, relaxing, not a lot of work. Keep that
in mind when making your plans. Tell everyone you know who is even
remotely interested in science fiction (or at least doesn't hate it).
Any comments, ideas, suggestions, talk to Catherine.
Oh yeah, the times. Setup begins at 9am, with activities from 10-4.
- TV/Movies/Books: X-Files last week was not a rerun.
The New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Not a new book, but it's really good.
Read it.
The Faculty is playing at Coral Ridge Mall.
Virus is coming soon.
- At the last meeting (2 weeks ago), a few people were there.
ICON - no report.
Gamicon - no report.
Anime - no report.
No new business.
No old business.
It was a very short meeting.
- Elections: Should we have them sometime? Yes we should.
Who wants to be president? Who wants to be the other officers?
Suggestions for new names for the group: Gonorrhea, Herpes, HIV.
We'll think up acronyms for them later.
Now, how should we go about getting nominations?
Let's just take the first four people who walk in the door at SIF Con.
Or perhaps the person who suggested Gonorrhea would like to be our next
president?
Or how about this: anyone not showing up at the next two meetings is
automatically nominated.
But seriously, we are doing nominations at next week's meeting, with
elections 2 weeks after that (on Jan. 27). (Didn't think of this at
the meeting, but the SAC is closed until the 19th. If we want to have
a ballot box at the desk for 2 weeks, then we should have elections
on Feb. 3 instead.)
- And that's it for this meeting.
