SFLIS MINUTES - MAY 12, 1999 - Mail: New L Ron Hubbard book coming out, even though he's dead. It's "A Very Strange Trip," written by Dave Wolverton. We got most of the rooms we requested in the IMU for the next year, including all the ones for Gamicon Lite. There's a thing we could advertise in if we were a business. - The paperwork is done, so we'll have a desk in the Student Activities Center for another year. We're supposed to clean it sometime. We'll decide on a time once we find out what hours the SAC is open this summer. One question: What should we do with the hundreds of books we have there? Maybe we can get the university to build a new wing onto the library. - Tonight is movie night. A choice between "The Black Hole" and "Soldier." We voted on which one would be the most fun to MST-3K, and "The Black Hole" won. For those who don't want to do that, there's a....... - Fantasy book discussion at Barnes&Noble, 7pm. Next Wednesday (the 19th) is the science fiction discussion group, which will be discussing HP Lovecraft's Annotated Anthology. It's also at 7pm. - The Star Wars thing: we're doing it in Cedar Rapids. We'll meet at 8am Saturday May 22 in front of the Wyndsong 5, and camp out for the day. This theater will allow each person to buy up to ten tickets. If you need a ride, talk to Jeremy or John. Iowa City people can meet at Maakestads. Call them at 626-3153 for info. and directions. Bring t-shirts, props, toys, anything you want. "The Press" has been notified. - Gamicon Lite is June 26. Events include a vampire RPGA game, and others which I thought I had written down, but I evidently didn't. - Winter Fantasy 2000 is Jan. 13-16 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The date was changed so it wouldn't conflict with so many other cons, such as Gamicon. - AnimeIowa has a "kick ass" hotel, which they visited Saturday. Don't tell anyone, but if you're reserving a room, you should ask for a plaza suite. They're the same price as the other rooms, but have 25% more space. There's limited number of them, so they'll probably go fast. - ICON: no news. Nobody at the meeting knows anything. - SWAMP has a room reserved for this summer's shows. It's W207 PBAB. On the second floor. Dates are May 23, June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25. Next show's theme will probably be "select the next series." And the May 23 show will probably start late, due to another event taking place earlier in the day. - Movies/TV: Star Wars is coming out, and everything else is staying away from it. Star Wars reviews are already out, and they're mixed. The most common comment: the special effects are wonderful, but the movie is made for children. But then, most of the reviewers were probably children when the original came out. - Party at Maakestads Friday Night. Will be showing the 3 original Star Wars movies and Battlestar Galactica. - Greg and Myrna are getting married Saturday. - Alois and Mary have a baby - Matthew Allen Tschampl. - Meeting's over. Come see a bad movie with us.
