SFLIS MINUTES - APRIL 7, 1999 - We had a room reserved for the meeting today, but our reservation seems to have been misplaced. - Mail: A copy of Student Leader magazine. The U of Iowa Placement Office is having a Virtual Career Fair April 12-23. Strategies for Success - a career workshop, April 17. "Ashes of Time" - kung-fu epic at the Bijou last weekend. American Indian Arts and Crafts Festival and Powwow, April 16-18 at Carver Hawkeye Arena. First annual Hawkeye Awards for student leaders, clubs, and organizations. with a form to fill out if we want to nominate someone. Deadline is April 14. Awards will be presented April 28. - Riverfest: There's never anybody in their office, so we'll have to leave a note or something. We'll have a table there, April 24, outside, rain or shine. We need pictures, photos, books, props, whatever. There will be a volunteer signup sheet at the meeting next week. - We're going to submit a request for rooms to reserve in the IMU for the 1999-2000 acedemic year. In order to get what we want, the request needs to be submitted by May 1. If you have plans for any activities in the IMU and would like SFLIS to reserve rooms for them, let us know soon. - Is anyone interested in putting our spare books together and having a book sale sometime this fall? It might be a good way to raise money. - Tonight's hijinx did not arrive in time for the meeting. Maybe next time. We'll be showing Monty Python and the Holy Grail after next week's meeting. Supposed to be in River Room 3 of the IMU, but we're hoping they'll move us to a more comfortable location. - Chaka Con is this weekend in Cedar Falls, in a building across the street from Oak Leaf Comics. - Anime show Sunday, C125 Poppajohn Buisness Adm. Bldg. 1-8pm. "Sorcery & Swords", with a couple Fushigi Yuugi OAV episodes, Mahojin Guru Guru, others. 4th anniversary show is the 18th. Last show of the semester is May 2. A schedule for summer is in the works. - Next week, the fantasy group at Barnes&Noble will be discussing "Legend" by David Gemmell. That's Wednesday the 14th, 7pm. - Saturday April 17 is the Mindbridge meeting, room 234 of the Clarion hotel, Coralville. 2-5pm. At 6pm that same day, SFLIS is meeting at Planet X. If you need a ride, contact Catherine. - Minicon was greviously injured, but not mortally wounded. It had some good panels, especially the fannish accent one. Very entertaining. On the other hand, There was no masquerade, no scheduled movies or anime, and not much in the way of gaming. - Movies/TV: Matrix - other than a "this doesn't work because..." plot gap, it was pretty good. Visually spectacular characters, costumes, lighting. Red Dwarf 8 is on IPTV. If you get the SciFi channel, MST 3K starts its last season Sunday, and there will be cameos from Joel and Frank. - Only 42 days until Star Wars opens.
