SFLIS Minutes

SFLIS MINUTES - NOVEMBER 4, 1998

Should the next attendance sheet be arranged in reverse alphabetical order
by the second letter of people's first names?
- Mail: We got a mailing from DemiCon.
There was a humanities symposium program 2 weeks ago.
- DemiCon will get Spider Robinson for sure this time. They're sending
  him monthly reminders.
- ChamBanaCon XXVII is Nov. 27-29 in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois.
A stack of fliers was passed around for people to take.
- Super Con is in Rochester, MN on Super Bowl weekend.
- Lots of other cons, too.
- Any other news?
- ICON: The final count was a little lower than expected.
The concom is considering ways to improve the dealers room for
  next year.
One popular suggestion was to win the lottery and build our own
hotel/convention center designed specifically for SF/anime/gaming
  conventions.
- More reports from ICON: ICON was very enjoyable if you didn't notice
  the people being shot offscreen.
It was a lot of work disposing of the bodies, but they burned pretty
well. The hotel charged a lot for the quicklime, though, and one
family had to rent a toxic waste dump.
- Lynda isn't completely here. What we see is only a part of her
  projecting into this dimension.
- AnimeIowa: It will be Labor Day weekend next year, at the same time
as a big con in Australia. If all goes according to plan, it will
be held at the Collins Plaza hotel in Cedar Rapids.
Very nice hotel, lots of function space.
- Come to the anime show this weekend and see female robots.
  Sunday the 8th, 1-8pm, C125 PBAB.
Next 2 shows: Nov. 22 - series with bad continuity
                 Dec. 6 - spoofs
- Promo plastics from Pinball Expo were passed around.
- Gamicon: There was stuff in an envelope for everyone to look at.
  A diskette! (wow)
  And....the bylaws of Gamicon, Inc.
Gamicon is incorporating itself, so it needs bylaws and it needs to
give itself permission to hold Gamicon.
The proposal was passed around. It's also on the web page, which you
  can get to from www.sflis.org
- Gamicon is helping support a game day at Legends, Saturday Nov. 7
from 11am to 5pm or somewhere thereabouts.
Sometime in the next several weeks, there should be an announcement
 regarding Gamicon's guest of honor.
- We're rapping. No. We're wrapping stuff at Barnes&Noble on Tuesday
  Dec. 15.
- The Dracula ballet was cool. Special effects were pretty good, except
for the lighting. Some of the changes were too abrupt.
- TV: XFiles premiers Sunday. It looks like they might actually
continue from where they left off last season.
Babylon 5 - River of Souls is coming soon.
  Buffy is new.
- Movie: Vampires got horrible reviews, but it's actually a good,
  well thought-out buddy movie.
- Books. There's a special discount available on the first book in the
Honor Harrington series by David Weber. That's to get you hooked
on them so you'll buy the whole series.
- The SF book club is meeting at Barnes&Noble at 7pm Nov. 11 for a
discussion of Orson Scott Card's Pastwatch-the Redemption of
  Christopher Columbus.
- Pete Wezeman is collecting misleading book titles. Just the titles,
not the books, since a lot of the books don't really exist.
Examples: a biography of William the Conqueror, called "Stormin'
             Norman"
a book on die casting with ferrous metals, called
             "Pumping Iron."
