SFLIS Minutes

SFLIS MINUTES - SEPTEMBER 16, 1998

- Microsoft has passed GE as the most valuable company in America.
We had a small debate about whether Bill Gates should be killed
for real or just hit with a paint ball.
The paint ball would probably be better, since we don't want to
give the appearance of condoning violence.
- There was a move to bring the meeting to order.
- Lots of mail this week:
invitation to join the Kappa Alpha Order
  Rape Victim Advocacy Program
  Urban and Regional Planning
  Riverfest '99. It's their 21st anniversary. They're looking for
  people to fill leadership positions.
the Equal Justice Foundation is having their 3rd annual 5k trial
  run benefit race/walk
  And many, many, many more.
- We have a report from ICON, all typed up very neatly. Here it is,
  word for word:
  * Paid pre-registration count is 275.
  * It is probably presumptuous, but we may have a huge turnout if
the local advertising works. We have 59 NEW people who pre-
registered, who were not on the mailing list. Historically,
we get about 1/3 of the total attendance by this time. If this
holds, we'll be turning people away. So, if you're not a gambler,
    register now.
  * The TICC skit needs people. We have a number of small parts that
we would like to have people for. Rehearsals are at 7PM Monday
through Wednesday at EPB. Talk to Mick (mtknife@avalon.net)
  * ICON needs volunteers for various odd jobs throughout the con.
See Lynda for details. We will have lots of cool prizes you can
buy with hours worked. (t-shirts, action figures, alien dolls,
    and much more)
  * Current schedule for ICON is posted on the web. www.sflis.org/icon
  * Hampton and Clarion are full. The overflow hotel is the Super 8.
Make sure you mention that you want the ICON block.
  * We are printing up more of the KKE shirts for sale at ICON.
  * Mindbridge meeting is Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3pm in Room 234
    of the Clarion Hotel.

(The EPB is the English-Philosophy building at the University of
Iowa. For the TICC skit rehearsals, meet by the vending machines.)
- Gamicon Lite is Sunday Sept. 27, 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. in the IMU.
Free RPGA games and a new game from Lange Games. "You'll be
shocked and amazed" at the door prized they're giving away.
- Anime: nothing special - no report.
- Anime: for real this time:
Anime Iowa is this weekend. A preliminary schedule was passed
around. They need volunteers. Sign up sheets are here.
Guests Steve Bennett, Kuni Kimura, and Kevin Bennett should be
arriving as we speak. The other guests should be here on Thursday.
You can help set up at the hotel Thursday night after 9 or any time
  on Friday.
  * Final prereg count is a little over 120.
Last year's total attendance was about 200.
At-the-door costs - $35 for the weekend, $25 for Saturday, less
than that for Friday or Sunday.
  * Bring a bag of candy (with individually wrapped pieces) for the
P-chan pinata. Even if you can't go to the con, you can drop it off
at the hotel any time Friday.
- All our papers are in order, so we will continue to be oficially
  recognized by the university.
- How about hosting viewings of science fiction movies on a regular basis?
We could get a room in the IMU or Poppajohn and do it once a month to
start with. Later, if it works out well enough, we could do it every
  two weeks.
There was some discussion about possible legal problems with showing
copyrighted movies - do we need to get permission from the rights holders?
As long as we don't charge admission, it's probably ok with most of them,
but we'll find out for sure before we show anything.
- On Sept. 29 the new season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer starts. John
Maakestad is offering his house as a place to gather for "Buffy" nights.
- TV stuff: Will KFXA continue showing Voyager? Maybe, maybe not. But
their SF stuff seems to be disappearing. If they drop it will someone
  else pick it up?
DS 9 is on channel 9 (KCRG) 10:30 Sunday nights. Reruns of Star Trek TNG
are on weeknights at 12:05 a.m.
Also on KCRG, the Stargate series starts this Saturday. It's on at
11:05 or whenever the beauty pageant ends.
Stargate the movie is on NBC Sunday night.
Babylon5 is on TNT at 5 Monday-Friday. There will be 5 new episodes
  beginning mid-late October.
- There's a Highlander convention in Country Club Hills, Illinois this
weekend, sponsored by the Highlander Store. Lots of Highlander merchandise
for sale. There will be a couple guests from the show, but no really big
  names. It's free.
- Tadao is in a movie, but he won't tell anyone what it is.
- The Press Citizen sent us a $20 credit. We decided to use it for another
ad. We can run the same one as last time.
- That's it.
