SFLIS Minutes
SFLIS MINUTES - AUGUST 19, 1998
- Pending the approval of the president, the next filk sing will be
at Henry's, time to be announced. (He wasn't here, so we volunteered
him.) We really should do one sometime. Does anyone want to host it?
- Comic Con report: (There's a lot more than this, but I wasn't
writing fast enough to catch everything.) They had good costumes there.
Lots of sailor suits and scantily-clad women. Many comic book
characters, and a few normal-looking people, too. A lot of exhibits,
interesting previews of comics-related tv shows, gaming. So much stuff
that there wasn't time to do everything.
- Report from World Con: (Again, this is only a small part of it.)
It was wonderful. It was good to see Biljon's jaw drop when he won
the Hugo. At 6'8", he may be the tallest person ever to win.
Joe Haldeman won the Hugo for best novel. He says that every 22 years
he writes a novel with "forever" in the title and wins an award. Maybe
next time he'll make a copy of "Forever Amber" and put his name on it.
"Contact" won the award for best dramatic presentation. The people
involved thanked the Bab5 fans for not being able to agree on a favorite
episode.
The Worldcon dealers room was huge. There were no beverages at most of
the room parties, and the stair doors were locked, making for long waits
for the elevators.
Competing for future Worldcon locations: Honolulu set their bid to
the high temperature in Phoenix for the previous day. 114.
- ICON: They're looking for commercials to put in the TICC skit. They
also need performers. No talent is needed. If you're interested, come
to River Room 3 in the IMU, 7 p.m. on Wednesday Aug. 27 for auditions/
tryouts/rehearsal.
If you have a car and know Iowa City, then you are qualified to be
guest liason for Charles DeLint. Talk to Lynda if you're interested.
They also need an at-the-con volunteer coordinator. If interested,
talk to Lynda.
Thanks to Troy Essmann and Galen Silversmith, the LARP webpage is now
working. You can get to it through ICON's webpage, which you can get
to from www.sflis.org
- Marty passed out some Star Wars jukebox 45 rpm records that he picked
up for free.
- Anime: Marty thanks the people who came to the party at his house Sunday.
There is a room reserved for the SWAMP shows this fall - C125 PBAB.
The shows are Aug. 30, Sept. 13 and 27, Oct. 11 and 25, Nov. 8 and 22,
and Dec. 6, plus ICON and Anime Iowa. Speaking of which...
- AnimeIowa: Over 100 prereges. They may be out of hotel rooms, but if
you want one, go ahead and check with the hotel anyway. There might be
one or two left, or someone else might cancel their reservation.
The programming schedule is being put together now.
There will be 30-50% more dealers tables than last year.
If you want to volunteer, talk to Mark McKibbin, or sign up through
the web page http://animeiowa.shc.uiowa.edu
Sign up sheets will be passed around soon.
- Gamicon Lite is Sunday Sept. 27, 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., 2nd floor of the IMU.
This may be your only chance this year to play in a RPGA event for free.
No experience needed.
There will be an official guest announcement for Gamicon at next week's
meeting.
- The U of I's fall semester starts next week, which means that there will
be a student activities fair sometime soon.
We will sign up for a table as soon as they unlock the Student Activities
Center so we can get our mail and see when it is and how to register.
A couple more ideas for recruiting new people: Have a party for new
students. Get a room and do a filk sing to accompany some other event
like Gamicon Lite.
- Do we want to start doing readings of science fiction at the meetings
again? We tried it for a while and then stopped. It may be possible
to do an occasional reading or book discussion at Barnes and Noble.
- The Avengers opened last weekend. It has off-the-wall comedy and is
a lot of fun, especially if you like Sean Connery.
- Minnicon is now at the Hilton instead of the Radisson. The Raddisson
is under new management and wants an extra $50,000.
Minnicon's last mailing was full of contradictions and unanswered
questions.
- And that's it.
