SFLIS MINUTES - JULY 15, 1998

Meeting was called to order. (Actually, it was shouted to order.)
- The rumor that the person running the meeting had his pupils removed is
  not true.
- Gamicon got paid! $1164.40 from the university.
- No new business.
- No old business.
  Yes there is.
- ICON: The mailing is going well. Or would be if the computer and printer
were on speaking terms with each other. It will be a little late.
There will be an immortal LARP, a little bit like Highlander with vampires,
  but not exactly.
ICON got their first response for the art show, so yes, there definitely
  will be some art there.
ICON is still looking for programming ideas, so if you have any, talk to
  the concom.
- Mindbridge is official now - the paperwork is done. First meeting was
tenatively scheduled for Sept. 10, then the 19th. Neither one of those
dates will work. Maybe the first or last weekend in Sept.? In any case,
written notices will be sent out before the meeting.
mindbridge.com is a registered domain name, but there's nothing there yet.
There will be a web page later on.
Mindbridge needs to elect a committee for ICON 24. If you're interested,
  talk to them.
- The new Barnes & Noble at Coral Ridge Mall is interested in helping us
with promotion. They can't give us any money, but if we could convince
one of the guests for ICON of Gamicon, like Charles DeLint, to make an
appearance there, they would send out press releases, provide free publicity.
- Are we interested in a SF reading group at Barnes & Noble? We could meet
there once a month, either during or after one of our regular meetings.
  Or maybe some other time.
- Anime: The show last Sunday was well-attended. Next show is July 26,
at the usual time and place.
In August, there will probably be a combination barbecue/anime show at
  Marty's.
Anime Iowa has over 60 prereges so far. It will be Sept. 18-20 at the
Highlander-Radisson. They are hoping to have an art show this year.
There will also be a marathon video room for those who want to watch
an entire series from beginning to end.
- Gamicon Lite is this Saturday, the 18th. 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., 3rd floor
of the IMU. There is also a LARP in downtown Iowa City. For the LARP,
meet at 1 p.m. upstairs at Great Midwestern Ice Cream. Show up early
and get a better choice of characters (and more ice cream). If you have
trouble finding it, just go to Gamicon Lite and they'll give you a magic
spoon that will lead you to it.
- TV/Movies: Zorro starts this weekend. Everafter on Aug. 7. H20 in a
  couple weeks.
Babylon 5 movie "Third Space" Sunday the 19th, on TNT at 7 p.m.
Other Bab 5 movies between now and January will be "Call to Arms"
  and "River of Souls."
- There are some new Cheapass games coming out, so check their website.
Titanic and a Jeckyll/Hyde type of thing, the name of which nobody was
  sure about.
- Does SFLIS want to become an amazon.com associate and make money by linking
to their website? We sould probably try to make a decision about this.
- Meeting adjourned.

One more thing: We need to update the SFLIS members address list. The
one I have is almost 2 years old, and a lot of new members have joined
and some old ones have moved since then. I've added the new names to the
list, but I don't have addresses for them. I will bring it to next week's
meeting and pass it around so people can make corrections to it. If you
have the addresses of people who have moved or are unable to attend the
meetings, or if you know of anyone who should be removed from the list,
please bring the information with you. Thanks.
