SFLIS MINUTES - JUNE 24, 1998

- An email message: Paramount is sueing a Star Trek fan for publishing an
unauthorized book. There are already over 100 unauthorized Star Trek books
that have been published, without any complaints from Paramount, so why
are they so upset about this one?
The book is "The Joy of Trek - How to Enhance Your Relationship with a
Star Trek Fan" by Star Ramer.
- Some discussion of cars that block parking spaces and the possibility of
using helicopters to move them. How many helicopters are there in Iowa
  City anyway?
- What to do with old Web Games materials? Use them as paperweights,
kindling? Or maybe (gasp) play GAMES with them?
- ICON: no report.
- Gamicon Lite is July 18, 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. in the IMU. If anyone wants
to run anything, talk to Jeremy Hitchcock.
There's also a LARP in downtown Iowa City on the same day.
- Anime: There's a show this Sunday, the 28th. 1-8 p.m. C107 PBAB,
featuring police women/cute cops. Flyers were passed around.
There's been a lot of email for Anime Iowa. Looks like attendance will
be good, if that's any indication.
- Concussion is July 10-12 at the Holiday Inn, 72nd and Grover, in Omaha.
There will be a lot of guests, including Margaret Weis, Laura Hamilton,
  S.M. Stirling, etc.
- Mindbridge: There will probably be a mass mailing and/or emailing to
  announce their meeting schedule.
- B.Dalton has Alien-Predator card games for half price.
- TV: Babylon5 is probably a rerun this week. Some Bab5 tv movies scheculed
to be broadcast in the next 6 months or so - Thirdspace (July), River of
Souls (November), Call to Arms (January). The "good" episodes of Bab5
will probably be released on video in the U.S. before too long.
Blakes 7 on IPTV will be ending soon. Then it will start over again.
There's an unconfirmed rumor that the BBC will be making a new Dr. Who
  movie.
Last year's Dr. Who movie from FOX may be shown again this fall, then be
  released on video.
- Quote: "We don't stock this book anymore because it sells too quickly."
- Movies: This fall's LD release of Kiki's Delivery Service looks like
a pretty nice one, letterboxed, Japanese and English soundtracks, close
  captioned subtitles.
Mulan is pretty good. If you're into Disney, go see it.
Godzilla has done miserably at the box office. But they'll make their
money back when it's released in Europe. Possible reasons for the
poor performance - they didn't release any pictures of the creature, or
any toys or anything until after the movie opened. The creature was
  ugly, too.
The XFiles had a good first weekend. One more like it and they'll start
making money. It's pretty good, worth seeing. Worth seeing many many
times if you're a rabid fan.
- A birthday cake for Jeremy Hitchcock was shared with everyone after the
  meeting.
- That's it.
