SFLIS MINUTES - MAY 20, 1998

Before the meeting began, there was some discussion about the overabundance
of disks from AOL, Compuserve, etc. and what to do about this problem.
The following suggestions were made:
* Use them for frisbees.
* Sharpen the CD's and make ninja throwing stars out of them.
* If you put a CD in the microwave, it makes a great light show.
* Use them for tiles or to refinish a tabletop.

Somebody's watch alarm goes off.  Is it 5:30?  Must not be - we're not starting
the meeting yet.
Everyone's hiding in the back of the room so they don't have to lead the
meeting.
Ok.  Meeting called to or-  Nope, not yet.

Meeting starts now.
- ICON's mail was read and passed around - a letter dated March 24 about a new
  L. Ron Hubbard story, "Fear"
- ICON:  122 prereg's so far.  They will probably do another mailing before
  too long.
  It's still at the Clarion/Hampton.
- A report from the ICON Incorporation Committee (remember, last fall we
  decided to form a corporation to run ICON)
  The corporation, "The Mindbridge Foundation" now exists.  They're working on
  a set of bylaws and they need a permanent board of directors.

  The proposed bylaws are on the Web at

  (I'm not going to reproduce them here, since they're 11 pages when printed
  out.)  At that same address, you will also find links to Nigel Ray's
  summary of the bylaws (only 2 pages) and the Mindbridge letter to SFLIS.
  It would be a good idea to read them, since we will be voting on this.

  Mindbridge is also asking SFLIS to decide on the board of directors.
  (Right now, the ICON concom is acting as a temporary board of directors.)

  Voting on the bylaws and the board of directors begins on Wednesday June 3
  and ends at the SFLIS meeting Wednesday June 10.

- ICON is now up to 123 prereges.  Wow!
- Gamicon:  Gamicon Light is Sunday June 28, 3rd floor of the IMU.
  There will be a LARP in downtown Iowa City on July 18, maybe on the ped mall.
  There was some speculation as to whether any of the people downtown
  would notice.
- Lynda had brain surgery 11 months ago.
- Anime Iowa:  The first mailing is out.  There are twice as many prereges  as
  there were at this time last year.
  They've already sold 5 more dealers tables than they had total last year.
  There will be an art show.
  There will be a 3rd video room for marathons (like the entire Fushigi Yuugi
  series, all of Evangelion, etc.)
- SWAMP:  Shows this summer will probably be June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26,
  but the room reservation hasn't been confirmed yet, so that could change.
  Themes for the shows, as of right now are:
  June 14 - furry
  June 28 - female policewomen/beauty under the badge
  July - historical and high school romance
  After hearing that, somebody asked if a Japanese version of "Grease" exists.
- Conquest is in Kansas City this weekend.
- Godzilla opens tonight (May 20), unless it opened earlier or later.
  Godzilla is female and French.
  Tadao Tomomatsu dies in the movie.
- The 4th season of Babylon 5 ends this week.
- A bunch of people went to see Godzilla after the meeting.
