SFLIS MINUTES - MARCH 18, 1998

- The IPTV telethon went ok, except that they ended up with the wrong
tape and had to show the old version of the 5 Doctors instead of the
new one. They said they'd show the redone version this Friday at
the end of the night if they get it in time.
- The writers group didn't get the Coralville library like they were
planning to. If you want to know where it's going to be, or if you
have a suggestion for a location, call Nonie Rider at 351-4995.
- There will be an anime dealer at ICON this year.
- Gamicon needs help with advertising and asking businesses for money.
And for free stuff to put in the convention survival packs.
If you want to help, talk to Becky Benhart. (from her earlier post,
you can contact her at benhart@avalon.net or 354-4910)
- Jack Vance's new book is out. Also Charles DeLint's new book.
Everyone should read it and write a TICC skit based on it.
- There's a great new Elmo book. Also some really cool SF stuff on
Sesame Street, including a parody of Star Trek with Muppets. Everyone
  should watch it sometime.
- The next anime show is March 29, featuring stuff by Clamp. There probably
won't be any Tenchi Muyo at that show, since the episode ends in a
cliffhanger and Marty doesn't want people to suffer for 4 weeks wondering
what's going to happen. They will probably be showing Clamp Campus
  Detectives instead.
- SWAMP is going to be busy next month. Anime Central in Chicago is April
3-5, and there will be 5-7 people going from here.
April 10-12 is Minicon, where SWAMP will be running an anime cabana.
On April 12, Brian Aker will be running the show here, and the theme
will probably be Lupin, everyone's favorite anime thief.
April 26 is the 3rd anniversary show, at which they will be giving
  away stuff.
- Anne Rice's new book from the vampire series is out, "Pandora".
But you have to have read all the other books in the series to know
  who Pandora is.
- The X-Files movie - they're hoping people will be able to understand it
even if they've never seen the tv show.
There's an X-Files CD-ROM coming out later this year.
- A Starship Troopers musical!! Not really, but what does everyone think
of it? There were one or two ideas for songs.
- A Moby Dick movie starring Patrick Stewart was on cable this week. Really
cheesy special effects. It was ok until the whale appeared. From here,
we got into a discussion of special effects in general. How much resolution
is needed for CGI special effects, CGI vs. models - what works best in a
given situation. How do the effects in this movie compare with those in
Jaws or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?
- Will there be any more Aliens or Predator movies, or any combinations of
  them?
- Monty Python is returning to Iowa Public Television.
- Looks like we're done.
