SFLIS MINUTES - MARCH 11, 1998
- Lynda, as substitute president, calls the meeting to order.
Or tries to. It doesn't work.
- We decide to eat here. In order to have an orderly meeting, we decide to
wait until everyone orders before calling the meeting to order.
- We passed around a "Priority Mail" sticker for no reason.
- Chaos reigns.
- The waiter came in and took people's orders.
- Lynda called the meeting to order for the second time.
- Iowa Public Television is having its fundraising festival now. On Friday
the 13th, SFLIS will be going to Des Moines to answer phones for them
  during Dr. Who.
There are 13-15 people going. There may be room for a couple more. If
you're interested, call Steve Crow at 626-6197.
Whoever is going should meet at 7:30 at the Westfield Inn in Coralville.
- On Friday March 27, the Press Citizen will be publishing a special
clubs/organizations edition. The deadline for submissions was today.
Michele Maakestad put together information regarding SFLIS, ICON, Gamicon,
SWAMP, etc. and submitted it for us.
- Michele also went to the Riverfest office and reserved 2 tables for us for
  Riverfest.
- Michele was declared the Eternal SFLIS Business Goddess.
- The sf writers group is up and running. Next meeting is March 24 at 6 p.m.
at the Coralville library. Call Nonie Rider at 351-4995 for more info.
- ICON has a hotel and it's not full yet. We have all of the Clarion and
half of the Hampton, in Coralville. You will not be able to reserve rooms
by calling the hotel. Instead, you should check the web page for
instructions on how to do it. http://www.sflis.org/icon
- ICON is accepting submissions for programming stuff.
- Hurry up and get your ICON prereg's in. You only have until Labor Day,
  then the price goes up.
- A catalog with the Forrest J. Ackerman museum of sci fi/fantasy/horror on
CD-ROM was passed around. Should SFLIS order it?
- Who's playing with the lights? The lights go off (mostly) and then the
  food arrives.
- Movies: Dark City - it either sucks or it's great, depending on who you
  ask.
  Gattaca was good.
The Man in the Iron Mask opens this weekend.
- Discussion of the Man in the Iron Mask by Alexandre Dumas, the historical
period that is portrayed, and a comparison of the king in this book with
the king in the Three Musketeers.
- Rumor of a Budweiser strike.
- Lloyd Bridges died.
- McLeod has been authorized to offer cable service in Cedar Rapids and
compete with TCI. 96% of the people there voted in favor of this.
- There was an anime show Sunday. Attendance was good in spite of the
weather, or the threat of bad weather. (How did they arrange for the
  storm to miss Iowa City?)
Next show is the 29th, featuring stuff by Clamp.
- Trans Iowa Canal Company: origin of the name.
A meteorite landed, leaving an east-west furrow. The guy who found it
thought it was a sign from God to build a canal across Iowa, connecting
  the Missippi and Missouri rivers.
  That's one version, anyway.
- We concluded with the declaration "Let the meeting dissolve into chaos."
