SFLIS MINUTES - FEBRUARY 25, 1998

I was late, but that's ok because the meeting hadn't started yet.
- Work is progressing on the paperwork to have us officially recognized as
  a student organization.
- Gamicon happened over the weekend. Very good attendance - 245 people there.
A record number of sign-ups for next year.
  Gamicon made money!
Lots of people had fun, but didn't get much sleep. War games, card games,
Barney Eats Iowa City. The pentathlon went really well.
All of James Ernest's games sold out. He said the con was "perfect."
  Overall, a big success.
- There was an anime show Sunday. Good turnout - a little better than average.
The mistakes on next month's flyers have been corrected.
- ICON silence will be broken next week. Maybe.
- Other conventions in the area:
  * Cy-con (psi con?, sigh-con? (I forgot to ask how to spell it.))
A small gaming con at Iowa State, in Ames, at the same time as Minicon
    (April 10-12)
  * Speaking of Minicon, you have until Feb. 28 to register, or else the price
    goes up to $70.
  * Plattecon Lambda, a gaming convention with anime in Platteville, WI
    March 6-8.
  * Anime Central in Chicago, April 3-5. Supposed to be big. The first
"big" anime con in the Midwest.
  * Anime Iowa, the reason Anime Central had to add the word "big" to their
flyers. It will be happening in September.
- TV: This week's South Park will probably be the last new episode for
  a while.
- Brief discussion of Scottish tartans. (I'm not sure how we got on to that
  subject.)
- The William Gibson and Stephen King episodes of X-Files were on this month.
If you missed them, wait for the reruns.
- Somebody asked this question and nobody knew for sure what the answer was:
Who was the first African American SF writer to get published? Was it
  Delaney? Butler? or someone else?
- Sci-fi ish movie coming out this weekend, but nobody can remember what
  it is.
- Theater displays are still counting down the time until Armageddon.
- Nothing else to discuss. Time for dinner.
