Gregg attended the Nebula Awards and schmoozed. Jack Vance became a lifetime master. Jane Yolen wants to know what Galen is doing in Iowa anyway...
The Violent Femmes were great, according to Andy.
Anime stuff. Last Sunday's 2nd anniversary was a resounding success. They sold out of SWAMP gas, and had to print extras. Eight new members were gained. Marty's Loaner Tapes were almost exhausted. Cake and soda was devoured. What an amazing time! Headcount was over 50 people living, breathing, taking in Anime in the same room.
And if you missed it, well, you could go to the next Anime show on May 4th from 1-8 in C107 Pappajohn. There might not be cake, but there'll be some silly stuff, because it's the silly show...and the one after that is on May 25th again.
Again? I mean, instead, of well two weeks later. The bottom line is May 4th, then May 25th, okay? Don't give me any trouble about this mistake. It's been a day...
BTW, Demicon is next weekend. Come see Barbara Hambly, Mitch Bentley, Charles Piehl, and of course Rusty Hevelin. Come see Piehl get Tic'ed. Come see the same Anime you could see in Iowa City on Sunday, just in case that's keeping you in town (of course, you can also see it in Iowa City if you can't go, or if you clone yourself, you could see at the same time or close to, in both places). Anyway, Des Moines. The Inn at University. May 2-4. Just so you know.
Jon reports that Villecon in Maryville, Mo was a fine time. He also reports that Acme comics and games will be coming for Gamicon. They are a big wargaming group, so they'll be demonstrating it at the next Gamicon.
There's still room in the Icon Dealer's room, but it could be gone any time. So, if you're interested, get in touch with the con com.
Lynda is looking up for a copy of Ford's Growing up Weightless. If you could lend her one, you could become a god.
Saturday is both Iscanic and Riverfest. Rumor has it (some other Rumor) that Run DMC may perform at Riverfest.
Ford's book will be discussed May 7. Short stories will be shared on May 14. The next book (whenever we discuss it) will be Arthur C. Clarke's 2001, followed by St. Exupery's The Little Prince.
Gregg
Try that again. Gregg's gonna get a list of magazines that current no, are current at Iowa City Libraries, and that will tell us which ones we can't get and help us make a decision to get one as a club. Did that seem foggy to you? Well, we want to get a magazine, and we thought we should avoid duplication. There. That should help.
Simon sez: New Millenium, New XFiles, Red Dwarf Season #1, Number #1, and Dr. Who is the Curse of Fenwyck (although it's better on video, because it's complete).
First Contact will be on video next month.
Henry and Galen have the flu. Get better guys!
Lynda's follow up MRI is on the 29th.
Dave volunteered to type up the recommended reading lists. He wants you guys to give him the names and authors of a couple of books, and descriptions of those by next week's meeting. Hey, you could do it at the meeting. Not high committment. So get it done. Get your 15 minutes of fame. Thanks to Dave for volunteering to do this.
We are going to do SIF Fest once a month, generally on the same weekend as Anime. Simon (god bless him) will be procurring a room for us for May 24th, which will be the next one. We'll go from 2-7.
That's it. If this isn't enough for you guys, check the archives. Watch for my midseason replacement coming soon. Gotta do something about these ratings. Sweeps week must've been deadly.
