SFLIS Minutes Feb 26, 1997

February 26 SIF minutes

Jon and Michele were absent due to Michele's illness, but Lynda delivered a report on Gamicon. About 200 people attended, 107 were in the Magic Tournament, and the profits were in the $100's. A very good time was had by all. Lynda, who put in 30 volunteer hours, won much loot.

Marty reports that the Student Activities Fair went okay. Jon recruited many folks for Gamicon. We also got some names.

Simon wants to do some publicity for Elyce when she speaks on March 14 (at 7:30--see past minutes for the big plug). He may be able to get some H_Heel;kjfd;lakdfj;lksdafj Woah, pardon the garbage in the middle. My computer is pretty wonky tonight, and we won't even talk about the shape I'm in... publicity in one of the display cases, and is looking for helpin using the page maker program. Marty suggested begging Noel or Laura, and if all else fails, beggin him.

Also, upcoming events can be listed in the DI and the Press Citizen.

Catherine will introduce Elyse. Possibly we can have tickets at Prairie Lights.

Galen says Monday is the posting of what the university will think about giving us for our budget. Then there will follow a couple of weeks of appeals.

Marty has made 2 SWAMP fliers--One for next weekend's show (C107 Pappajohn from 1-8) and a generic flier for the out of towners we have been getting many of recently.

SWAMP sent out a guest of honor letter for AnimeIowa today. Also after Sunday's SWAMP show, there will be an AnimeIowa meeting for interested parties to give their input. That's at eight o'clock.

The Dean Haglund update. Dean will come to Iowa City for $1200. We think not...Lynda will call and let Penguin's know how many are coming to the show on Friday, March 10 at 7:30. If you want to get in on the special group discount rate, you've got to call Lynda at 341-8185.

Henry asked about Voyager view times, and mentioned there's a Cryocheck (sorry about the spelling) interview on the TV Guid Web Page.

Galen needs last week's Babylon 5.

For the Friend's Telethon Volunteer stuff--if you've signed up, meet at the Best Western Westfield at 7, 7:30ish Friday night. We'll tak off from there. Or take off from there. Boy, has Gamicon shot my concentration. Can't stay up all night anymore when you're 30, I guess...

If you're interested, Lynda has a story about a sheep...

Simon's TV Report

                --New Voyager
                --Old Millenium
                --Dr. Who Dragonfyre
--Mythmaker: Featuring Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred
--Old XFiles from Season 2 "Die Hand, Die Verletzt"

Does anyone have that epidsode from ST:TNG where the Ferengi first talk about how their women don't wear clothes? Lynda wants to get it for a friend. Bryon suggested that the Quark's mom one from DS9 is better. oSimon has XFiles spoilers. See him if you want to know them.

Peter has run into some time trouble with SIF con, mostly owing to the availability of the Wheelroom. Right now we're looking at possibly the 13th of April, which is a Sunday, since this is a one day con, and mostly for the locals, we should be able to pull that off. The other alternative is to go with April 12, and leave the Wheelroom at 6pm, but use other smaller rooms as the con continues into the wee hours.

Various ideas for panels for SIF con were tossed around. Trendy tie-ins might be dinosaurs and meteors, or cloning. RC might know of someone who could mediate cloning. A suggestion for Dinos and asteroids might be the guy we had who talked about Mars at Icon. Does anyone remember his name?

Simon suggested we might record Elyce's talk and use it at SIF con. Of course, after obtaining her permission for such a thing. He's gonna check on potential recording folks.

Simon also suggested showing his new 5 Doctors special at the con. Discussion suggested it might be best to get permission, so this will also be looked into. looks like I got out of the minutes without too much more mishap. I'm getting way too old to be a hardy geek, I guess. Next week. Mata ne
