SIF Notes from 2-12-97

Lynda received a phone call from Brian Weigel of Brian and Susan Stuart fame. Brian was recently in town for a pacemaker replacement and is doing fine now. Susan has had a run in with an electric stapler, but is also fine now. Speedy recoveries are expected.

Big news! Dean Haglund of XFiles fame will be at Penguin's Comedy Club in Cedar Rapids on March 7 and 8 for 7:30 and 10:00 shows. Sounds like members of the group may go as a group to the March 7 show at 7:30. It's non smoking. Tickets are $9.50 in advance, and $11.50 at the door, although we may get a group rate. If you're interested in going along, the person to call is Lynda at 341-8185.

Prairie Lights has an SF author reading work on the 8th of March.

We may be able to get Dean Haglund to come and speak to our group. Simon's checking into this. Haglund was considered a really big draw at the table that hosted him at GenCon, to the dismay of other dealers. "God damn stand up Gen Con comics..."

Jon gets God status for something to do with this.

God Galen submitted our budget, the info of which is being circulated. All told, we asked for $4120.20. We'll see what we get...If you want to see the budget, Henry's got the stats.

There was some talk about doing a university bus to Lone Star Con, this year's world con. The Des Moines group is also talking about chartering a bus for $20 a person. We'll see how all this works out, neh?... Rumor (not me) also has it that there has been some possible discussion of chartering a plane to World Con.

Simon has pulled off a guest speaker arrangement. On March 14, from 5-7 in the Purdue Room of the IMU, Elyce Helford will be speaking on "A Perspective of Women in Science Fiction," or something like that. This will also be publicized by WRAC. Tell you friends! Tell people you meet on the street!

There was some talk of supplementing Ms. Helford's trip, and we voted to donate $50 dollars to expenses.

One authorized signature on the budget is okay...

The 18th of February is the world famous student activities fair from 11-2. Be there or be square. We can seat about 3 and a half people behind the table, so if half of you isn't doing anything, and you want to join Jon, Marty, and Galen, feel free.

Henry, who is a full God, (see later in the minutes for more mighty deeds) will be making a SIF flier by the student fair. He needs those SIF logos and stuff to put in. Galen says we can get the stuff from the net...

"We are all deities in our own way...

Anime news. This Sunday, skirt chaser anime will show in Pappajohn C107 from 1-10. Big news! Swamp goes bimonthly starting with the next show. This trend will continue through May...

TV Puppies --
New Babylon 5
Stuff comes out of the Worm Hole this week--DS9
New Voyager Tonight. Borg Action
Millenium--The Thin White Line
Dr. Who--Paradise Towers
XFiles--Kaddish
Thanks to Simon, Galen, and Bryon for the information.

A general discussion about the new Star Wars, acting, added stuff, cool scenes. Lynda says great on River Hills Screen. Lucas is making 9. In theory....

Jon adds Gamicon does have a Star Wars theme...

Mark Hamill has been doing a lot of guest appearances. Politically Incorrect, Tom Schneider. He's been singing and dancing on Broadway, and doing the Joker's voice on Batman, The Animated Series.

Harlan Ellison was also on Politically Incorrect.

If anyone's interested in the TIC skit that's being worked up for Demicon, let Lynda know. She's looking for someone to ride with her to Des Moines and back. Rehearsal happens from 6-8 on Sundays.

TIC also offers TIC after dark this year. The best quote would be "Fascinating."

Rumor (yes, me) notes that Eric Pierpont of Alien Nation fame (he's George) was a guest on DS9. What a babe!

Next week is the week to talk about switching Icon hotels from the Westfield to the Clarion. Lots of advantages. Some disadvantages...Check the Clarion out, see if you like it, show up next week, and talk.

Peter is still waiting to hear from the Union about SIF con facilities...

Henry ascended to full Godhood as he remembered this was the last week for Gamicon bids. No other bids came in, so the new Gamicon Con Committee is Michele, Teresa, Susan, and Andy.

That's it. Hopefully, it's minimally full of Rumor...Anyway, feel free to correct, especially if your correction is true.
