SFLIS Minutes December 11, 1996

SFLIS Meeting notes from December 11,1996

John M. Ford is Icon 22 Guest of Honor. He's a World Fantasy Winner twice, a Phillip K. Dick winner once, and has written lots of spiffy stuff. Accompanying John will be Alys Matheson.

Various movies received reviews from Blaise. 101 Dalmations doesn't work, although it isn't the actors or the puppies. Most likely, it's the script? Ransom also misses mysteriously...

Interesting dog trivia continues. Lassie makes number 11 of the top TV stars.

The Union Book Store is selling Beanie Babies and Hotter Than Lava Lamps (made of thermoclay.) Such a holiday deal.

Cultural Diversity day is February 8, from 12-5. Possible we'll be able to represent interstellar culture there.

Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week is January 19-25. If we want to be in the program, we should let them know.

3rd Annual Dance Marathon is coming up.

Supplemental Funding Agreement is going to be signed.

A list of action words can be found on the back of the Student Organization Newsletter, if you want to ameliorate your doublespeak.

Be it known here in the minutes that Brooks and Blaise are heretofore known as Canadian Deities of SIF for SIF's life. Be kind to the gods of the north when you are in Saskatchewan...

Rob reviewed Hong Kong Action Theatre: The Roleplaying Game. You can not die! Great emphasis on action! Hopping Ghosts! Pictures from Wu's The Killer! Signature moves! Great game!

Simon announces February 1997 Dr. Who Video releases. Green Death, Brain of Morbius, Hand of Fear, 5 Doctors (with extra footage), Mark of the Rani, and Dragon Fire.

Broadcasting this Friday, The 2 Doctors, with Patrick Troughton's last appearance as the Doctor.

Snowflake in Kansas City is February 14-16. Chase Masterson and Richard Hatch will be among the guests. Price is $25 until the new year, after which it is $35. For information, ask Bryon or Cath.

At the Bijou, Thursday through Friday, International Tourney of Anime and Ghost in the Shell. Check with the Bijou for times.

SFLIS meets next week, but not on Christmas or on New Year's.

Next week there will be a filk sing at Lynda and Rob's, although a time is not yet specified...

No longer are there any insiders at the Westfield...

Lynda and Rob will soon own Golden Throats 2, and have Shatner and Nimoy singing. Steve reviewed 1, 2, and 3 of that set, and informed that Transformed Man and that Spock album are also available on CD.

Simon will read an excerpt of the Man Who Fell to Earth next week.

Peter reported on Children of the Ice Age, and said it was a good book.

Greg read some Aboriginal science fiction from Australian writer Terry Dowling, and said it was pretty good.

Zoey's attache Noel, just brought a Pentium, so we won't be seeing much of him.

SMAUG went well this weekend. Being run now are a Swashbuckling game, and a Junior Justice League game, both on the hero system.

Anime is this Sunday 1-10 in the Indiana Room of the Union.

Peter reminds that he'd like to see programming ideas for SIF con--either things you want to see, or things you'd like to do. Post those ideas here, and I'll collect them and pass them on, or hand them directly to Peter. You can also e-mail Peter at pwezeman@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu with your thoughts.

It's dark, we're not sure if the Canadians did it, and we're out of here. Of course any mistakes belong to the author of the above texts. I'm saving my typos like regal stamps (does anyone else remember regal stamps?)
